Cycling: Bryan Coquard (Vital Concept – B&B Hotels) has had the perfect start to the season. On the first stage of the Etoile de Bessèges, he edged out Sacha Modolo (EF Education First) and Pierre Barbier (Natura4ever – Roubaix Lille Métropole) in a bunch sprint. The French sprinter thus also takes the lead in the overall standings.
Coquard wins and slips into the leader's jersey
Bryan Coquard (Vital Concept – B&B Hotels) had to wait nine races last season for his first win of the season. In 2019 it should be successful right from the start. The Frenchman was able to prevail in the bunch sprint in front of the small Italian Sacha Modolo (EF Education First) and the French Pierre Barbier (Natura4ever – Roubaix Lille Métropole). The 26-year-old – who is again hoping for a wildcard for the Tour de France – slips into the leader's jersey. Before that, on the 145,3 kilometers from Bellegarde to Beaucaire, a breakaway group of five with the Swiss Jan-André Freuler (Amore & Vita – Prodir) dominated the race. The four-day tour lasts until Sunday. A mountainous time trial on the final day will bring the decision.
