Cycling: Tobias Johannessen has won the fourth stage of the Etoile de Bessèges. The Norwegian broke away with three companions on the final climb and then won the sprint of the quartet thanks to an early start. In the overall standings, Frenchman Benjamin Thomas remains in the lead.
Tobias Johannessen surprises the competition
We have to remember this name: Tobias Johannessen (Uno-X) shook up the elite on the fourth stage of the Etoile de Bessèges. Until the beginning of this week, the only 22-year-old Norwegian was known to very few cycling fans. But now everyone should know him. He secured the day's victory on the 145-kilometer section from Saint-Hilaire-de-Brethmas to Mont Bouquet with a strong performance uphill and an explosive final sprint. Jay Vine (Alpecin-Fenix), Antonio Tiberi (Trek – Segafredo) and Clement Champoussin (AG2R – Citröen) had broken away with him on the final climb and reached the finish line after him at the same time. The real favorites – Pierre Latour (Total Energies), Diego Ulissi (UAE) and Build Mollema (Trek – Segafredo) – couldn't catch the quartet and have to be content with places five, six and seven. The Frenchman remains in the overall standings Benjamin Thomas (Cofidis) in the lead before the final time trial on Sunday.
