MTB cycling: Former mountain bike world champion José Antonio Hermida and racing bike star Joaquim Rodriguez will again be starting together at the ABSA Cape Epic in South Africa this year. The two “retirees” are really keen to stir up the field of elite drivers. At its premiere last year, the two-man team finished 18th, and this year a top ten finish is to follow.
So this is what retirement looks like for ex-pro cyclists! Although José Antonio Hermida and Joaquim Rodriguez have retired from active racing, the special thrill of competition does not seem to have completely let go of the two Merida brand ambassadors. After the successful premiere at the ABSA Cape Epic last year, the two Spaniards didn't need to be asked to start again in 2018. The former MTB world champion and racing bike superstar says he is well prepared for this year's race in South Africa. Joaquim Rodriguez in particular was able to deepen his skills. When he first started in 2017, the racing cyclist was only a few months on the MTB saddle, in the meantime he has gained a lot of experience in the field of mountain biking.
The two cyclists took advantage of many opportunities to train and ride together. In preparation for the mega event, there are also a few selected races on the program, such as the Andalucia Bike Race. The expectations of the two riders are of course correspondingly high. After 18th place last year, a top ten placement is to be added in March. The experienced duo will compete in the Merida Factory Racing Team jersey at the ABSA Cape Epic from March 18th to 25th. After the prologue there are seven very demanding stages. In South Africa, the riders can expect a total distance of 658 kilometers with 13.530 meters of altitude difference. The duo have already revealed their tactics for the prestigious race: As always, full throttle!
