Cycling: Phil Bauhaus (Sunweb) won stage 5 of the Critérium du Dauphiné. The German was the fastest of many well-known sprinters in the mass sprint in Macon. He relegated Arnaud Demare (FDJ) and Bryan Coquard (Direct Energie) to second and third place. The only 22-year-old was able to celebrate his first victory on the WorldTour. There were no significant changes in the overall ranking.
Four breakaways had no chance against the peloton
After the yesterday's time trial the last flat stage was on the program today at the Critérium du Dauphiné. Before there are mountain stages on the last three days, the sprinters should get their last chance on this tour today. As expected, the teams of the fast men did not miss this. From La Tour de Salvagny, the route took the field over 175 kilometers to Macon. In particular, the Katusha-Alpecin, FDJ, Direct Energie and Dimension Data teams were involved in the management work. Because it was a four-man lead group to catch again. Koen Bouwman (LottoNL-Jumbo), Dylan Van Baarle (Cannondale-Drapac), Marco Minnaard (Wanty Groupe Gobert) and Julien el Fares (Delko Marseille) got on their feet right after the start. They were able to pull out a lead of over five minutes. Gradually, the escapees were caught. Van Baarle fought back the longest, but finally had to realize that today's stage would belong to the sprinters.
Phil Bauhaus triumphs for the first time in the WorldTour
Around five kilometers from the finish, Van Baarle was caught. The sprinter teams prepared for the final. Katusha-Alpecin and Bahrain-Merida formed their sprint trains. Tony Martin (Katusha-Alpecin) should prepare the victory for his captain Alexander Kristoff. But nothing came of it. Because another German secured his first big success on the WorldTour in Macon today: Phil Bauhaus (Sunweb) passed everyone and was able to celebrate. Frenchman Arnaud Demare (FDJ) moved into second place ahead of Bryan Coquard (Direct Energie). There were no significant changes in the overall ranking.
