Criterium du Dauphiné #1: Laporte catches Herregodt's runaway

June 4, 2023 by Michael Behringer

Cycling: Christophe Laporte has won the opening round of the Critérium du Dauphiné. He and his team Jumbo - Visma could not have made it more exciting. Because the last remaining breakaway – Rune Herregodts – was caught just a few meters before the finish line.

The Critérium du Dauphiné started today with an enormously exciting race to catch up. Rune of Herregod (Intermarché – Circus – Wanty), a 24-year-old Belgian – could dream of the greatest success of his career until a few meters from the finish line. But then he was sprinted over. Christophe Laporte (Jumbo – Visma) lived up to his role as favorite and won the sprint of the severely decimated main field Matteo Trentin (UAE) – and that Rune Herregodts, who was caught SO close to the finish line that he even finished third. Some sprinters – including Sam Bennett (Bora – hansgrohe) and Ethan Vernon (Soudal – Quick-Step) couldn't follow the pace of the peloton on the hilly terrain.
