Testing: Test: Pedro's Starter Tool Kit

March 10, 2015 by Marcus Degen

Park Tool has almost a monopoly on professional tools, but many mechanics still swear by Pedro's. The tool selection may seem a bit poor, but everything in the set is professional quality. A well-considered range also means that nothing is superfluous. The price is high, but you only get what you really need.

Sprocket puller, Allen key (1,5 mm to 8 mm), pedal wrench and screwdriver, along with side cutters, a sprocket brush and tire levers. The odd tool with the weird nipples is Pedro's replacement for a chain whip: the nipples grip between the teeth of the smallest sprocket and the sprocket puller fits into the center hole. The system only works with cassettes with 11 or 12 sprockets and not with track sprockets. The chain rivet has additional spoke tensioners in its grip, but collects negative points because the rivet pin cannot be replaced. The whole set comes in a waterproof tool wrap for easy portability. Thanks to eyelets, it can also be hung on a wall. Additional pockets provide space for a growing tool collection.
