cycling: Tour of Oman #5: Chris Froome takes the lead

February 22, 2014 by the editorial office

Oman1

The Green Mountain is the mountain of Brit Chris Froome (Sky). As in the previous year, the Tour winner secured not only the day's victory but also the overall lead this year, which will probably hardly be taken away from him on the final stage. In the final of the 147-kilometer stage from BidBid up Green Mountain, he won ahead of the American Tejay van Garderen (BMC) and the Colombian Rigoberto Uran (Omega Pharma-QuickStep).

The favorites only managed to catch up with the leading group on the 10,4 percent steep climb to the target. Marco Canola (Bardiani-CSF), John Murphy (UnitedHealtcare), Thomas Sprengers and Preben Van Hecke (Topsport Vlaanderen-Baloise) had built up a maximum lead of 3:30 minutes during the stage. It only fell below the minute mark in the last few kilometers, but didn't last when Froome and Co. called for an attack.
