Cycling: Jonas Vingegaard won the fifth stage of Tirreno-Adriatico. After a 30-kilometer solo, the Dane was able to enjoy his next win of the season in peace. The two-time tour winner also takes the overall lead.
Vingegaard is in a class of his own
With another demonstration of his strength jonas vingegaard (Visma – Lease a Bike) clinched his seventh win of the season. On the 144 kilometer long section from Torricella Sicura to Valle Castellana, the Dane attacked with 30 kilometers to go and made things clear early on. Behind them, his opponents struggled to keep the deficit within limits. However, this was only partially successful during Vingegaard's furious journey. At Tirreno-Adriatico, after today's section, it's probably only about second place - should Vingegaard continue in the same way tomorrow. Then the sixth stage up to Monte Petrano is on the program, the queen stage of this tour.
Del Toro works for Ayuso
Five kilometers before the summit of San Giacomo jonas vingegaard (Visma – Lease a Bike) is already on the offensive. The Dane was only traveling with a large chainring and probably knew what kind of ride he was in for before the stage began. There were still around 30 kilometers to the finish line. But the lead over his pursuers steadily increased. When we started the descent, we had Jay Hindley (Bora – hansgrohe), Isaac del Toro (UAE), Juan Ayuso (UAE), Ben O'Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Thyman Arensman (Ineos Grenadiers), Ivan Sosa (Movistar) and Cian Uijtebroeks (Visma – Lease a Bike) is already one minute behind. While the last-mentioned Belgian naturally held back completely with the follow-up work, del Toro in particular proved to be an absolute noble helper for captain Ayuso. Nevertheless, the gap continued to grow. Ayuso crossed the finish line second in the pursuit sprint ahead of Hindley.
10 breakaways – leader Milan left behind early
Ten drivers went on the offensive with high hopes of winning the day. These included, among others Magnus Court (Uno-X Mobility), Kasper Asgreen (Soudal – Quick Step) and Filippo Gana (Ineos Grenadiers) also very well-known and extremely strong professionals. Since the Visma - Lease a Bike team in particular kept the pace in the peloton high from the start, the group didn't really get far away and was caught up again at the foot of San Giacomo. The overall leader also suffered from this hard-fought stage. jonathan milan (Lidl – Trek) lost touch early on.
Chris Froome retires with broken scaphoid
Some riders were unable to compete in today's fifth stage from Tirreno-Adriatico due to injuries. The most famous among them is Chris Froome (Israel – Premier Tech). The four-time winner of the Tour de France suffered a broken scaphoid bone when he fell on the second section. Also Rune of Herregod (Intermarché – Wanty), Kristian Sbaragli (Corratec – Vini Fantini) and Anthony Delaplace (Arkéa – B&B Hotels) are no longer included.
