Tour de France #12: Tom Pidcock wins after a strong performance by Chris Froome

July 14, 2022 by Michael Behringer

Pidcock Tour de France

Cycling: After a strong performance, Tom Pidcock can look forward to his first Tour stage win. The Brit won as a soloist in Alpe d'Huez in hot temperatures on the French National Day. His compatriot Chris Froome was third and showed himself to be much improved.

Pidcock Tour de France

Pidcock was the fastest uphill and downhill

The mountain biker tom pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) has secured the prestigious stage victory in Alpe d'Huez. After 165,1 kilometers, the Briton won the twelfth stage of the Tour de France as a soloist. He had actually missed the attack of the breakaway group of the day. Only on the descent of the Col du Galibier did he catch up thanks to his skills. On the ascent to Alpe d'Huez, he finally left his companions and confidently drove towards his first stage victory in the Tour de France. Compatriot also presented himself strongly Chris Froome (Israel – Premier Tech). The four-time Tour de France winner appeared to be in good shape for the first time after his bad fall. Behind louis meintjes (Intermarché – Wanty Gobert) but it should “only” be enough for third place.

Schönberger was also in the group of the day

At the beginning of the stage, six riders were able to break away from the peloton, including the Austrian Sebastian Schoenberger (B&B Hotels - KTM). However, there were further attacks up the Col du Galibier. Julius Ciccone (Trek - Segafredo), tom pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers), Chris Froome (Israel – Premier Tech) and louis meintjes (Intermarché – Wanty Gobert) made the leap forward – sometimes only on the downhill.

Jumbo – Visma controls the action

In the group of favorites, Jumbo - Visma had everything under control. Yesterday they set off a veritable firework display, today they controlled what was happening throughout the day. With their strong mountain train, they rode up to Alpe d'Huez at such an evenly high speed that the competition didn't dare to attack. Only Tadej pogacar (UAE) should try it once with 4,5 kilometers and once with 2,5 kilometers before the finish. But jonas vingegaard (Jumbo – Visma) he just couldn't get rid of.

Geschke stays in mountain jersey

Once again there is reason to be happy Simon Geschke (Cofidis). The German will also start tomorrow in a mountain jersey. Although he could not collect a single point, no opponent was able to pass him. Now he has the best cards to still own the dotted one on the last day of rest. Because the next three stages are not easy, but significantly fewer points are awarded than last.
