Sophisticated mini tool with 18 functions: SKS Tom 18 in the test

5 January 2024 by Andrew Waldera

Test mini tools: Equipped with 18 functions, the SKS Tom 18 mini tool is intended to help with almost all bicycle defects. The special features include, among other things, a brake pad opener, which unfortunately is not found in many multifunctional tools. We took a closer look at the well-thought-out multitool for smaller repairs on the go.

SKS Tom 18 Minitool: Structure and processing

The multifunctional tool is delivered in a practical neoprene bag. This not only protects the tool itself, but also other things that are stored together with the SKS Tom 18 in the backpack or saddle bag. The workmanship of the compact tool, which is relatively light at just under 180 grams, is at a high level. The integrated tools also give a very good impression. The little all-rounder is also not lacking in functionality. The inventory also includes a chain riveter, a T25 key and a brake pad opener. The Allen keys range from 2.5 to 8 mm, only a 2 mm key is missing for the perfect appearance.

handling

The SKS Tom 18 multitool allows you to work efficiently for smaller repairs as part of a tour. In addition to the torsion-resistant basic structure, this is also ensured by the high quality of the individual tools. Due to the design, the handling is of course not comparable to tools in the workshop. Nevertheless, the multifunctional tool is able to impress with its good and pleasant grip. The robust chain riveter can also get full marks, even stuck rivets are no problem. A little tip: a little oil on the thread makes the work easier. Only the feel of the tire levers is not entirely convincing. Separate tire levers should definitely be carried here.
