Beginner racing bikes in the test: With the Fuji SL 2.1, we tested a high-quality road bike that is ideal for getting started with road cycling thanks to its high level of comfort and a pleasantly safe riding experience. You can find out what else the relaxed beginner has to offer and where any weaknesses might lie here in our test.
The framework at a glance
The frame of the Fuji SL 2.1 is a carbon frame at the highest level. You only have to make some compromises when it comes to aerodynamics, especially compared to special racers you will need a few watts more on flat and downhill passages. Uphill, however, you can rely on the strengths of the Fuji SL at just 7,4 kilos.
Almost all tubes like down tube, seat tube, top tube and fork use flattened carbon sections to improve stiffness. The fork has been specially reinforced - a patented technology from Fuji's carbon manufacturer called Reinforced I-Beam or RIB technology - to improve stiffness and steering precision.
Despite all this, the SL 2.1 puts comfort first and therefore comes with a rather relaxed seating position, which is probably too upright for sporty drivers and professionals. However, it is the perfect starting position for ambitious and leisurely beginners.
The equipment at a glance
In addition to a complete Shimano Ultegra shifting group, which impresses with its longevity and precise, mechanical shifting processes, the Praxis Works crank is another equipment highlight on the Fuji SL 2.1. The other add-on parts such as handlebars, stem, seat post and wheels come from Oval and continue the comfortable basic alignment of the frame with more relaxed ergonomics.
Fuji SL 2.1 in review
With its relaxed geometry and a more upright seating position, the Fuji SL 2.1 is all about comfort. The frame and the attachments complement each other perfectly and dampen vibrations and unpleasant impacts wherever possible. Thanks to the smooth running and stable structure, you not only have a comfortable feeling on the bike at all times, you also feel very safe. Especially for (re-)beginners who still feel a little uncomfortable on the narrow tires and like to take it easy on the road, a perfect opportunity to get to know road cycling without rushing into anything. Of course, you can also be sporty with this racing bike and, thanks to the appealing total weight, you can also cover a good amount of altitude, but it is basically aimed at everyone who would like to take it a little easier without sacrificing an attractive look or high quality .
