Beginner racing bikes in the test: The Cervelo Caledonia has already caused quite a stir on the market, because the bike seems (at least on paper) to combine several racing bike categories thanks to innovative features and successful combinations. This should offer a multitude of options, especially for road bike newcomers, without having to commit too much right from the start. You can find out here what the Cervelo Caledonia can really do and whether it convinced us!
As a beginner, you don't have to do without internationally proven brands. The manufacturer Cervelo, well-known from professional sports, is also pursuing a similar concept with its Caledonia and offers beginners and experienced bikers alike a racing bike that is tailored to the individual needs of the rider and does not set the direction from the outset. So you can fully devote yourself to racing bikes and first find out where you actually want to go. In our opinion, a great approach based on the motto: "Everything can, nothing has to." After all, who knows where the journey will go.
Cervelo Caledonia – The frame at a glance
The Cervelo Caledonia offers an extremely versatile platform that offers various adjustment and setting options and can cover a wide range of seating positions. With a basically very balanced geometry, you also get a comfortable but sporty seating position. In addition, there are light and aerodynamically optimized tube shapes, which have been adopted from the Cervelo professional racing bikes, but which have been reinforced at the crucial points to offer additional stability. This is exactly what should ensure more comfort and safety. Mounting points for mudguards and a tire clearance of up to 34mm enable a wide range of uses and increase the suitability for everyday use enormously. The screwing points for a top tube bag are on top. The Caledonia base model relies on semi-integrated cable routing, a traditional cockpit and a round seat post with a diameter of 27,2 mm.
Cervelo Caledonia – The facilities at a glance
Our Cervelo Caledonia model came with a complete Shimano Ultegra shifting group, which offers first-class, mechanical shifting pleasure with its robustness and precision. With DT Swiss P1800 Spline wheels and 30mm Vittoria Zaffiro Pro tires you get a good mix of rolling characteristics, comfort and robust durability.
Cervelo Caledonia tested
With the aerodynamically optimized and curved tube shapes, the Cervelo already offers a lot in terms of looks alone. On our test drives, it was also able to convince us with a good portion of comfort and smooth running. This should be a successful starting point for all those who want to find each other for the first time.
The Caledonia really knows how to play to its strengths, especially on the flat and on faster sections. Because of its aerodynamic features and the good running smoothness, it can be ideally brought up to speed and maintains it accordingly. No wonder that the handling is designed for more relaxed passages and reaches its limits here and there in more technical passages. When changing direction quickly, you should take your foot off the gas and get used to the steering behavior, especially as a beginner. Nevertheless, the Cervelo Caledonia is extremely stable and doesn't lose its composure that easily. This in turn, together with the more relaxed seating position and the high level of overall comfort, ensures a pleasant yet sporty and dynamic driving experience.
