Product news / E-MTB: With each passing season, the number of e-bikes in Canyon's portfolio is growing overall, and with the Torque:ON they have just presented, the Koblenz-based company has electrified almost their entire mountain bike range. After the hardtail Grand Canyon:ON, the touring all-rounder Neuron:ON and the trail bike Spectral:ON with motor were already in the range, a model for the roughest terrain has now been added. With 180 or 175 mm spring travel, progressive geometry and the corresponding equipment package, nothing stands in the way of freeride adventures and bike park days without a lift.

wheel size: 27,5 inch
Engine: Shimano EP8
Battery pack: 504 Wh
Even if the name would suggest it, the Torque:ON is more than just a tried and tested torque with a motor: During the development, a hand was invested in both the geometry and the rear end - because the higher weight and the special driving characteristics of an E- Of course, MTBs also influence its handling – both positively and negatively.
Shimano EP8 - not only with the Canyon Torque:ON
The Canyon Torque:ON is the direct seller's first e-MTB with Shimano's new e-MTB motor, which was presented last late summer. In the course of the presentation, however, the entire E-MTB range will be updated, with the EP8 and some larger batteries. With its 85 Nm maximum torque, the EP8 is on par with a Bosch CX or Brose Drive S Mag in terms of power, but brings with it that little bit of additional dynamics and liveliness that made its predecessor so popular with sporty drivers. At 2,6 kg, the motor itself is also around 300 g lighter than the direct competition.
Weight beats battery
Speaking of weight: Despite a – to quote Canyon – “indestructible frame” made of aluminum and the correspondingly robust add-on parts and components, the new e-freerider from Koblenz weighs quite astonishingly less than 24 kg. Of course, the Torque:ON is not a real lightweight, but it was important to the designers not to go beyond the frame with the weight and thus take away any liveliness and agility from the bike. However, the laws of physics cannot be overturned at Canyon either, which is why a compromise was made: the bike in all equipment variants comes with a – by today’s standards – quite small battery with 504 Wh. According to Canyon, the integration of the 630 Wh Variant, including the higher dead weight, made the bike over a kilogram heavier.
If the capacity is not enough, Canyon offers the option of ordering the Torque:ON directly with a second battery. This comes completely ready to install with the corresponding cover and can be replaced fairly quickly on a longer tour. The transport in the backpack is no longer a big problem - numerous manufacturers now have corresponding models in the battery holder inside. Nice: The option costs 500 euros extra - a fair deal, given the regular price for the battery of 550 - 600 euros.
Rear triangle and geometry in E-MTB mode
As mentioned at the beginning - with the Canyon Torque:ON they didn't make the mistake of simply fitting a motor to the bottom bracket of the well-known Torque, packing the battery into the down tube and writing E-MTB on the flag. In order to be able to maintain the driving characteristics of the non-motorized successful bike with the motor, a few adjustments have been made. When it came to the geometry, the focus was on building a smooth-running bike for park and freeride adventures, but one that didn't feel like a tank riding on rails on the trail. In other words: where possible, great importance was attached to agility, which is shown, for example, by the rather short chainstays of 430 mm. The decision to only equip the bike with 27,5 inch wheels fits in with this.

As with the geometry, the rear triangle has also been fine-tuned: the well-known triple-phase suspension is used, ie sensitive at the beginning of the suspension travel with a platform around the sag point and increasing progression towards the end, but it differs significantly from the Adjustment of the "normal" torque. Due to the higher system weight on the E-MTB, the progression is stronger on the one hand, so the rear triangle becomes tighter more quickly in order to prevent bottoming out with hard impacts as far as possible. In addition, the anti-squat value has been reduced: the chain pull (i.e. when pedaling) automatically tightens the rear end of modern enduro bikes - the higher the anti-squat value, the more clearly this effect is noticeable. In this way you achieve high efficiency on uphill sections, but sacrifice sensitivity and comfort and also reap pedal kickback. Since the efficiency of the E-MTB rear triangle is not that important when going uphill thanks to the motor support, the rear triangle on the Torque:ON could be made more comfortable or "plush".
models and trim levels
The Canyon Torque:ON starts with two basic configurations that are the same in the frame, motor and battery: The same robust aluminum frame, Shimano EP8 Power and the 504 Wh battery integrated in the down tube are everywhere. However, while the Torque:ON 8 is equipped with a Shimano 12-speed drive and RockShox chassis, the top model has been given a Sram GX Eagle and Fox Factory suspension elements. For both models, there is the already mentioned option of ordering a ready-to-install second battery, which costs 500 euros extra.
