Merida eSpeeder & eSilex: Tailwind at the touch of a button

10 December 2020 by Florian Nowak

Product news: The eSpeeder and the eSilex are the two new Merida e-bikes that the German manufacturer from the Stuttgart area recently presented. You want to combine low overall weight, versatility, balanced e-support and a clean look with a slim appearance.

Merida eSpeeder & eSilex at a glance

For many, the bike is more than just a companion in everyday life and means freedom, fun and speed. However, you often reach your limits with a bike, especially when transporting larger loads, when climbing steep inclines and on longer rides. Here you often wish for a bit of additional support and the necessary tailwind. Merida now provides this tailwind at the push of a button with its new e-racing bike/road bike models eSpeeder and eSilex.

The two bikes have a similar structure and follow the same concept. The focus is on the combination of low overall weight, a slim shape, stylish look, versatility and perfectly coordinated e-support in an optimal overall package.

Nevertheless, the two bikes differ in terms of terrain and area of use in order to offer the rider the best possible support in each area. Both bikes use a new eAL700c aluminum frame and a Mahle X35+ for the frame and drive. Only the fork built into the frame is tailored to the respective application and differs accordingly. The Mahle X35+ system impresses with its low overall weight and its simple shape, so that the shape hardly differs from bikes without support. Of course, you can still look forward to active e-support, because the new Merida eAL700c frames have an internal battery with 250 Wh, while the motor in both models supports you with a maximum of 40 Nm. The engine setup is specifically tailored to the respective requirements of the eSilex or the eSpeeder.

The built-in rear wheel hub motor also promises almost resistance-free pedaling, which should make life much easier for us, especially at speeds over 25 km/h, and should ensure a similar riding experience with the motor switched off as with a normal non-motorized bike. The motor and battery are controlled via a well-placed iWoc control panel, which provides information on both the assist level and the battery level, and allows easy switching between the different levels. If the integrated battery is not sufficient, both bikes can be upgraded with a 250 Wh range extender, which is mounted on the frame like a water bottle, making it suitable for longer trips.

Both Merida e-road bikes can be fitted with 700c or 650B tires with a width of up to 42 mm or 47 mm. In addition, both bikes have full cable integration through the so-called "WIRE PORT" headset cap.

Merida eSpeeder

As the perfect companion in everyday life or on sporty fitness sessions, you can benefit from additional support with the new Merida eSpeeder if you need it. At the same time, the bike offers a sporty, urban look and hardly gives any indication that this is an e-bike.

With straight handlebars designed for the best control when cruising through traffic and grippy, comfortable 700c tires, the eSpeeder is perfect for commuting, sporty rides and bike adventures. The eSpeeder 400 EQ model, which is suitable for everyday use, is already equipped with mudguards, luggage rack, lighting system and side stand as standard.

Merida eSpeeder prices:

  • eSpeeder 400 EQ 2.449 euros
  • eSpeeder 200 2.249 euros

Merida eSilex

The Merdia eSilex is the perfect choice for all sporty riders who often want to choose the gravel variant with their racing bike and are looking for an off-road alternative. Similar to the non-motorized Silex, the eSilex is available in a more robust variant with 650B wheels or a snappy 700C setup. Gravel/off-road tires are installed on both versions for the necessary grip. Thanks to countless attachment points on the frame and fork, the eSilex can be converted into a real adventure bike in no time at all and become our faithful companion for bikepacking adventures and day tours.

Merida eSilex Prices:

  • eSilex+ 600 2.899 euros
  • eSilex 400 2.699 euros
