Tour of Catalonia: The decision in Barcelona
Day of decision at the Tour of Catalonia! After starting in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, the pros had to complete a circuit in Barcelona eight times on the 143,1-kilometer stage. With the Alt de Montjuïc climb, which is 2,1 kilometers long and has an average gradient of 5,2 percent, the course was made for a final hunt for the leader’s jersey Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana). First, however, eleven riders were able to break away from the peloton and form the leading group of the day. However, after a few attacks on the final circuit, only one of them remained: Davide formolo (Bora – hansgrohe) The Italian accepted the fight against the favourites. Alone, he defended himself within the last laps - with success. The German team Bora - hansgrohe thus brought the next stage victory in the Tour of Catalonia.
Lopez parried attacks from Quintana, Yates and Bernal
After the team Astana already a group around Nairo Quintana (Movistar) had to catch up, were the helpers from Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) consumed. When the sibling attack of Simon and Adam Yates (Mitchelton - Scott) was started, they were allowed to go. Together they attacked former members of the leading group and distanced themselves from the group of favourites. For a long time it looked like nobody would be able to counter the twins. But then the strength dwindled and the catch followed, after the teams Movistar and Sky finally came to the aid of Miguel Angel Lopez. Egan Bernal (Sky) attacked again in the final lap but couldn't get away. Enric Mas Nicolau (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) finally used a quiet moment to move up to second place relatively safely Maximilian schachmann (Bora – hansgrohe) to secure. But Miguel Angel Lopez celebrated the overall victory ahead of Adam Yates and Egan Bernal.
