Cycling: Marijn van den Berg won the fourth stage of the Tour of Catalonia. The Dutchman was fastest in perhaps the only mass sprint of the tour.
Van den Berg wins the bunch sprint
After two tough mountain stages, the climbers were able to recover a bit on today's fourth stage of the Tour of Catalonia. The sprinter teams were in demand. After the breakaway trio was caught, the expected mass sprint actually took place after 169,2 kilometers from Sort to Lleida. France Bryan coquard (Codidis) started the sprint too early, which is why Marijn van den Berg (EF Education – EasyPost) benefited. The Dutchman wins the section ahead of the Belgian Arne Marit (Intermarché – Wanty) and the Latvian Emil's Liepins (dsm-unternehmenich PostNL). Henri Uhlig (Alpecin – Deceuninck) came 13th as the best German.
No chance for the escapees
Three drivers went on the offensive right at kilometer zero. The Belgian thomas degendt (Lotto – Dstny), the Spaniard Urko Berrade (Kern Pharma) and the Norwegian Idar Andersen (Uno-X Mobility) were able to compete for the only mountain classification of the day on the Port d'Àger. De Gendt drove over the second category mountain ahead of his two companions. The five points mean he doesn't really climb that far in the overall mountain rankings. The mountain jersey belongs very confidently after two victories in mountain finishes Tadej pogacar (UAE). De Gendt also secured full points in the first intermediate sprint in Balaguer. Because of his strong start, he turned the trio into a duo because Berrade could no longer follow. The two remaining breakaways were finally caught just over ten kilometers from the finish and further attacks were thwarted.
