Track cycling: The Track Cycling World Championships in Apeldoorn, Netherlands, has started. There, enthusiasm for cycling knows no bounds. Rightly so, as the first day proved. After all, the hosts were awarded gold twice. In the women's team sprint, however, they were at a disadvantage. There the German duo Miriam Welte & Kristina Vogel triumphed. With this gold medal, Kristina Vogel has increased her tally to nine.
Dutch start strong in the home World Cup
The Dutch got off to a perfect start in the Track Cycling World Championships at home. First, the women and men qualified for the final in the team sprint, then they won the gold medal directly in the first decision. In the women's scratch, Kristen Wild was crowned world champion. Jolien D'Hoore from Belgium won silver ahead of Amalie Dideriksen from Denmark. Austrian Verena Eberhardt was #11, Swiss Aline Seitz #12 and German Tatjana Paller #17.
Kristina Vogel and Miriam Welte live up to their role as favourites
One can speak of a clear box in the women's team sprint. There, the German dream duo Miriam Welte and Kristina Vogel triumphed with a clear lead over the hosts Kyra Lamberink and Shanne Braspennincx. Pauline Grabosch was also used in the lead-up and ensured a good time. Bronze went to Russia ahead of China. Kristina Vogel has now secured her ninth gold medal at world championships. Now only one is missing to draw even with the Australian Anna Meares.
It was also quite clear in the men's final - but at the end with cheering outsiders. The Brits Jack Carlin, Ryan Owens and Jason Kenny were actually the favourites. But Nils Van't Hoenderdaal, Harrie Lavreysen and Jeffrey Hoogland threw a spanner in the works. They were also around half a second faster in the final and won the second gold of the evening for the Netherlands. France secured bronze from Russia, against whom the German trio of Stefan Bötticher, Maximilian Levy and Joachim Eilers previously lost.
'Kristina Vogel just feasts herself on gold medals!' 😆
