Track cycling: On day #1 of the Track Cycling World Championships in Berlin, the BDR can celebrate the first medal - and it's a gold one. Pauline Sophie Grabosch and Emma Hinze defeated Australia in the team sprint final.
Grabosch & Hinze secure the first gold for the BDR
Pauline Sophie Grabosch and Emma Hinze won gold in the team sprint at the Berlin Velodrom. The German duo beat Australia in the final with a time of 32,163. Grabosch/Hinze were already the fastest women in the field over the 500 meters on the first lap. Unfortunately, things went worse for the German men, who could not qualify for the fight for the medals.
Wild continues to dominate
The German-speaking participants had no chance in the scratch. The Swiss Aline Seitz, the German Lena Charlotte Reissner and the Austrian Verena Eberhardt finished in 14th, 16th and 23rd place. As expected, the Dutchwoman Kirsten Wild won. Silver went to the American Jennifer Valente and bronze to the Portuguese Maria Martins.
Many records in the Berlin Velodrom
It went better in the team pursuit. After today's successful qualification, the German women will fight against Italy tomorrow for the chance of a medal. Unfortunately, the men missed this opportunity against Great Britain. The qualification looked really strong. The clock stopped at 3:50,304 - a new German record. It's a pity that the clock stopped more than three seconds later in the race and that you had no chance to retire. The Swiss were able to break their national record twice. But with a 3:51,665 the Confederates lost to the Australians. So they won't be able to fight for a medal tomorrow either. The Danes eclipsed everyone. The time of 3:46,579 already in qualifying meant a new world record. Immediately afterwards they improved it again to 3:46,203.
