Cycling: At the UCI MTB World Championships in Hafjell, the German U23 riders went into a race with ambitions that ended with mixed feelings for them.
In addition to the Lexware duo Georg Egger and Christian Pfäffle, the Multivan Merida professional Julian Schelb was also at the start. The latter was able to establish himself at the top and finally achieved a solid seventh place.
Behind him things were going well for Egger in particular. The Swabian worked his way up from a rather miserable starting position to a top 20 position and was happy to finish 17th - for the first time in his young career he managed to jump into the top 25 at world level. "I've noticed all week that my legs are getting better every day. Last year it also worked out that I did my best race at the World Championships”, explained the 19-year-old.
Things didn't go so well for his teammate Christian Pfäffle. After two defects, he retired from the race early.
The Dutchman Michiel van der Heijden secured the title in the U23 class ahead of Jordan Sarrou from France and Howard Grotts from the USA.
