Product news / E-MTB: With the Orbea Rise 2023, one of the most exciting and probably best E-MTBs of recent years is now getting a successor. The basic qualities were retained, the details fine-tuned. So you now get more options for the batteries, a renewed drive and even less weight.
It's been a little over two years since Orbea presented the Rise, one of the most exciting light E-MTBs to date. Its ratio of motor power, battery size and weight was unique at the time and together with the successful riding characteristics, the Basque bike found a large fan base right away. About a year later, with the Orbea Rise H, an aluminum version was introduced, which did not bring any groundbreaking innovations, but on the one hand integrated a larger battery and also set the price bar for light e-MTBs significantly lower than the bikes of the competition. Today, another year later, the Orbea Rise 2023 follows, which combines the strengths of the two previous variants, but remains unchanged in its basic features.
Orbea Rise 2023: Consistent further development
The new Rise follows in big footsteps, so the expectations for the Spaniards' new light E-MTB should be enormous. On the other hand: Why should you fundamentally redesign a still ultra-modern E-MTB like the Rise "without need"? Orbea should have seen things like this or something similar in the development at Orbea, because the new Rise is more development than a new beginning.
This is how the previous Orbea Rise performed in comparison to other e-MTBs:
Many things that have been learned since the Rise was introduced two years ago and some of which have already been implemented in the Rise H are now also incorporated in the Orbea Rise 2023. For example, there is the battery: In the future you will have the choice between 360 Wh and 540 Wh, in all variants. The integration of the energy storage has also been revised - it is still permanently installed, but it sits a little lower for a better center of gravity and weight could also be saved, around 100 g says Orbea. In addition, there are around 400 g savings on the completely newly developed carbon frame itself - this means that the total weight of the bike (in the weight-optimized top version with a 360 Wh battery) can be reduced to less than 16 kg. The range extender known from the Rise H with an additional 252 Wh capacity is also compatible with the new Rise.
Now with EP801-RS – still limited to 60 Nm
There are technical innovations in the engine: The EP8 RS is replaced by the EP8 RS in the carbon versions, the aluminum models also come with the slightly cheaper but heavier EP6 RS. As the name suggests, Orbea is sticking to its RS concept with the new Rise. So anyone hoping for an "unleashed" Shimano motor with 85 Nm is likely to be disappointed; On the other hand, the 60 Nm maximum torque of the RS motor feels like a lot more compared to the light E-MTB competition. The EP801, which is unchanged in terms of appearance and weight compared to its predecessor, is intended to support a wider cadence range and also offers significantly more options for customization. Any number of individual profiles can be created via the corresponding E-Tube Project App, in which each support level can be adjusted via various parameters.
Furthermore, the new motors result in more options in terms of operation: The Orbea Rise 2023 comes with the new EN600 control unit as standard. In addition to the control buttons for controlling the drive, this integrates LEDs for displaying the support and battery status and a button for switching the system on and off. This not only saves Orbea the small box on the brake line for the LEDs, but also the button on the seat tube to activate the drive. By doing without this, the Rise now offers a significantly greater insertion depth for the seat post than its predecessor. As before, the usual Shimano display can of course also be supplemented via the MyO system if desired.
New carbon frame with proven geometry
While the aluminum models only get new colors and components and the frame remains unchanged, the carbon versions of the Orbea Rise 2023 have been redesigned from the ground up. Great progress was made, especially in terms of weight - the frame in size M should only weigh 2,2 kg, which would make it one of the lightest E-MTB frames on the market. Practical: The new rocker now offers space for a multi-tool that is included.
However, nothing has changed in the basic key data of the frame: The Rise still rolls on 29-inch wheels and still comes with 140 mm of travel in the rear, either 140 or 150 mm in the front, depending on the equipment. The kinematics have also remained the same - more sporty and progressive than comfortable and cozy. The same applies to the geometry, which also remains untouched except for a millimeter here or there. Why change something that works well?

The SIC system introduced with the Orbea Oiz and recently also integrated in the Race E-MTB Wild is now also being used on the Orbea Rise 2023: Cables, trains and lines disappear directly on the headset inside the frame, which on the one hand ensures a clean look - for any maintenance work However, you should allow a few extra minutes for the installation. Incidentally, the cable of the EC600 Remote is even routed inside the handlebars - if you want to change the latter, you can of course route it externally as usual and also inside the headset.
Orbea Rise 2023: models and trim levels
The Orbea Rise 2023 is launched with a total of seven equipment variants. Four of them with the new carbon frame, three with the well-known aluminum frame. The price starts at 5.299 euros for the Rise H30, the top model Rise M-LTD tears a hole of almost 11.000 euros in your wallet. In between, the entry-level carbon model Rise M20 should be of particular interest, which for 6.999 euros has a thoroughly successful equipment without too painful compromises. Those who like riding the latest stuff should take a look at the Rise M-Team; the new XT Di2 is already installed here, which was able to convince in our test with some unique features and the usual strong performance.
Incidentally, only three of the complete bikes come from the factory with a fork with 36 mm stanchions at the front, the others rely on a rather slender 34 mm. However, adjustments in this regard can always be made via the Orbea MyO program, regardless of whether you want to swap the fork mentioned, drive different tires or have a longer seat post. You can always choose between 360 and 540 Wh for the batteries. The best way to get one is to pay the corresponding surcharges directly on the Orbea website an overview.
