Eurobike 2022 / product news: One day before the official start of the Eurobike, Bosch presented a whole bunch of new products for the 2023 model year. These included numerous well-known (or new?) motors for the Smart System, new battery options, a new generation of the E -Bike ABS and the system controller including mini remote. There are also updates for the Flow app – including anti-theft protection!
New drives in the Bosch Smart System
Last year, Bosch had to listen to some criticism that the Smart System only had one motor available, namely the CX Gen 4. That will change in the 2023 model year!
Bosch Performance Line Gen 3
Perhaps the best all-rounder among the Bosch drives is finally getting its upgrade to the Smart System for the 2023 model year. It retains its well-known qualities, i.e. its 75 Nm maximum torque with a very pleasant and low background noise at the same time, but at the same time it has all the features of the Smart System - i.e. the connection to the Flow app and the option of the large 750 Wh battery
As part of the Performance Line in the Smart System, Bosch is also introducing the new Auto Mode. A tamed E-MTB mode, so to speak, which automatically regulates the support performance across the various support levels and is therefore intended to compensate for headwinds, for example.
Performance line speed
Even if S-Pedelecs are still a marginal phenomenon in this country, the Performance Line Speed is an integral part of the Bosch portfolio and will also be upgraded to the Smart System for 2023. Basically it is a CX Gen 4, but it supports up to a maximum of 45 km/h.
cargo line
The Cargo Line drive is also based on the CX motor; unsurprisingly, this is now also available here in the Smart System. Bosch is also introducing the new Cargo Mode. This should adjust itself adaptively to different loads and regulate the support performance accordingly. The goal: smooth and safe handling, no matter how heavily the bike is loaded.
Batteries: Powertube 500 and 625, new external batteries up to 725 Wh
As positive as the new 750 Wh battery was received last year, the calls for other battery sizes were just as loud - not because the drivers or manufacturers want to do without capacity, but much more because the Powertube 750 is not always light due to its size has to be integrated into the frame and also increases the weight.
Bosch is now reacting to this and is also supplying the other well-known Powertube sizes for the Smart System - the Bosch Powertube 500 and Powertube 625. Both are significantly more compact and can also be easily accommodated in smaller frame sizes, for example. They are also lighter: the Powertube 500 weighs 3 kg, the Powertube 625 3,6 kg. For comparison: the Powertube 750 weighs 4,4 kg.
The two new external batteries - Powerpack 545 and Powerpack 725 - are quite surprising. However, Bosch makes it clear that both are intended for special applications where internal batteries are not an option, such as cargo bikes.
Pushing aid with Hill Hold
What sounds extremely inconspicuous at first, should in practice be a fairly important innovation - the pushing aid! Here Bosch integrates the so-called Hill Hold function in the Smart System. That means: When the pushing aid is activated, the e-bike no longer rolls back down into the valley, but stays in place. If you take your finger off the remote, Hill Hold remains activated for ten seconds and the rear wheel locks. For example, you can move the front wheel on bends or take a short breather. Incidentally, we were able to try out the new function as part of our ABS test and were very impressed!
Bosch E-Bike ABS Gen 2: brake assistant for cargo, city and mountain bikes!
Perhaps the biggest highlight among the new Bosch e-bike products for 2023 is the e-bike ABS Gen 2. After the predecessor was unable to establish itself among the general public, the new system is likely to be significantly more successful. The shrunken dimensions eliminate perhaps the biggest point of criticism - the optics. The new actuator sits slim on the fork - the box of the predecessor has disappeared.
A lot has also happened in terms of function, even if the method remains the same: the system monitors the front and rear wheels and intervenes - if necessary - on the front wheel and regulates the brake pressure.
We have a detailed article on the new Bosch E-Bike ABS Gen 2 including riding impressions of the new trail mode. If you are interested, you should take a look here:
Bosch e-bike ABS Gen 2: Smaller, more versatile, better? The new Bosch ABS in the trail test!
Product news / test: With the Bosch E-Bike ABS Gen 2, the brake assistant should also be socially acceptable on e-bikes in the future - with a significantly improved look and different modes for different areas of use, from cargo to trail. We have already been able to test the system. ABS on e-bikes is not a real innovation in itself. A few years ago […]
Bosch System Controller and Mini Remote
There are also quite exciting innovations for the peripherals for the 2023 model year. Finally, finally, finally Bosch also has a really small, compact control unit for sporty e-MTBs. Although the LED Remote introduced last year was already in this direction, it was still significantly larger compared to the competition and took up quite a lot of space on the handlebars.
This is now changing with the Mini Remote in conjunction with the System Controller. The "brain" of the system now moves from the handlebars to the top tube in the system controller. It is visually reminiscent of the LED Remote and also has similar functions: The LEDs provide information about the charge level of the battery and the support level, the system can be switched on and off with a button, and another button allows you to select the support. However, the drive can now also be controlled via the really very compact Mini Remote - minimalist e-mountain bikers should be happy about this option!
Bosch Intuvia 100
The somewhat outdated Intuvia display will be replaced in 2023: the new Intuvia 100 keeps the basic idea, is a monochrome, high-contrast and easy-to-read display for touring and city bikes.
Flow App: eBike Alarm and Komoot integration
There will also be a number of updates for the Flow app over the course of the year, which will include long-awaited features. A highlight is certainly the eBike alarm function that was announced last year: In connection with the ConnectModule, the e-bike can be put into an "alarm state" - as soon as it registers a movement, the owner receives a notification and the tracking in the Flow app is activated. In addition, a loud and unpleasant alarm tone on the e-bike itself should ensure that the thief cannot devote himself to his "work" in peace. Meanwhile, the location can be tracked in the Flow app via the GPS integrated in the ConnectModule and passed on to the police. In addition, the drive of the e-bike is deactivated and can only be activated again with the owner's Flow app.
Detailed information on the acquisition costs is not yet available - but 12 months after purchase, the service will cost EUR 3,99 per month or EUR 39,99 per year.
There is also good news in terms of navigation: after the Flow app received the relevant functions with its last major update, it will soon also be possible to display the instructions along with a small map on the Kiox 300 display. They are also working on integrating Komoot into the Flow app: Routes can then be planned in Komoot and transferred to the Flow app.
