The new Garmin Edge Explore 2: Special e-bike features and traffic-calmed route planning

July 14, 2022 by Florian Nowak

Product news: At the Eurobike 2022, Garmin is presenting the Edge Explore 2, a new bike computer that aims to stand out from the crowd with a routing function with extra traffic-calmed routes and special e-bike functions.

Explore new roads, find routes with less traffic and get specific information for e-bikers, these are the highlights of the new Garmin Edge Explore 2. Thanks to the function for tour-specific maps, you should find your way around like a local. In addition, optimized maps are supplied with the Explore 2, which display particularly popular roads and trails and highlight busy areas that can be avoided. After all, who wouldn't rather cycle along the quiet lake than on the busy country road. However, it still seems unclear at the moment whether current data is used, which is retrieved via Bluetooth with the connected smartphone, or whether basic information about the traffic volume is simply incorporated into the Garmin maps.

In addition to the "normal" Edge Explore 2, there is also a so-called "power" version, which differs from the power model in the charging pins on the underside. This model is primarily intended for e-bikers. Here you can connect the Explore to systems from Bosch and Shimano as well as Smart Sense from Cannondale, which charges the Garmin via the bike's battery. According to the manufacturer, both Edge Explore 2 have a battery life of up to 16 hours with all important functions.

Garmin Edge Explore 2 – more e-bike features

In addition to the routing functions already mentioned and the e-bike charging features, the new Explore has other exciting innovations for e-bikes in store. Because if you are using Shimano Steps or a bike with ANT+ technology, you can use the Explore 2 to display special e-bike status pages with data fields such as battery life and much more. This is not particularly surprising at first, but the Garmin system can really convince with smart routing and a range alarm based on battery charge level, motor support and range. Because the Edge looks after the driver, it chooses the route according to the factors mentioned above, so that you are never left without a battery.
