Test: The Italians from Thok prove that it is worth thinking outside the box when buying a bike. The bikes are not well known to us, but the new Thok MIG 2.0 proves that you can get a very fun E-MTB at a relatively low price - if you are willing to make a compromise or two.

The cheapest e-MTB in our test at well under 4.000 euros comes from the Italian manufacturer Thok and it proves that with clever savings you can put together a really fun bike for comparatively little money. Of course, cuts were made here and there, with the components as well as with the engine. The E7000 is the cheaper of the two Shimano drives.
Difficult way to the summit
It is also the drive that has a direct negative impact. In terms of performance, it falls well behind the competition and ensures that you have to pedal noticeably harder on steep terrain than you are used to with a modern E-MTB. In terms of dynamics, response behavior and naturalness, it can still convince and the low volume is also a plus of the "small" Shimano motor.

After all, Thok has given the MIG 2.0 with the SX Eagle from Sram a 12-speed drivetrain with a wide range of cassettes. So there's an easy mountain gear and you can climb the summit without great effort - even if it takes a little longer than with a more powerful mid-engine. However, the weakening drive isn't the only reason why the MIG 2.0 doesn't want to feel really comfortable when climbing. The seating position is a bit rear-heavy and without shifting your weight forward, the front wheel threatens to lose contact on steep sections.

Great trail bike
The fact that our overall rating is quite positive despite this below-average climbing performance is due to the strong performance of the Thok MIG 2.0 on the trail. The RockShox suspension works well, but is rather on the firm side at the front and rear and should therefore appeal more to sporty drivers than touring enthusiasts. With its handy geometry and mix of wheel sizes, it offers a very nice mix of lively cornering and a powerful dash of smooth running. The potent Maxxis Assegai tires with puncture-proof Exo+ carcass also contribute to the latter.
Thanks to the very low center of gravity, the Thok is generally extremely full on the trail, even when it really rumbles. Unfortunately, the Sram Guide T brakes were less convincing, as they got quite sweaty on long descents.
The low price is also made possible by the fact that Thok still relies on an external battery. This sits under the down tube and is still nicely integrated thanks to the clever frame design. The battery cover not only protects the battery from stones thrown up, but also ensures that it sits securely. This is not least noticeable through the pleasant background noise on the descent - rattling? None!
