Spectrum / E-Performance: Ever since the postal services market opened up in 2008, private deliverers on bicycles have been part of everyday life. A fully loaded delivery bike can weigh up to 60 kilograms, and the constant braking and accelerating makes delivery a real tough job. Modern electric drives promise to make work easier here. Since the end of 2016, the PIN Mail delivery service has been using five bikes with Pendix drives, and in autumn 2017 a further 27 retrofit kits were installed.
Bernd Fricke, COO of the delivery service PIN Mail AG in Berlin, is convinced of the need-based retrofit solution with Pendix e-drives. The motivation for the upgrade is to make the day-to-day "backbreaking job" easier for the deliverers. The drivers have to cope with constant acceleration and braking, some of which are very demanding routes. The company called its employees “true heroes” in a large-scale publicity campaign. The wheels retrofitted with Pendix electric drives make the work of the deliverers much easier on specific routes. The PIN Mail delivery service with the Pendix eDrive is currently still in a test phase, but this should be very promising so far.
Bernd Fricke praises the particularly uncomplicated battery replacement. If even more efficient battery technologies come onto the market, the drive does not have to be replaced directly - a very important cost factor for private delivery services. In order to have a little more buffer, PIN Mail switched from the 300 battery to the 500 power level. According to the first experiences in winter 2016/17, the cold season would have made itself felt in the battery performance, but according to Fricke far less than with other electric drives used. In addition to PIN Mail, other courier services are also equipping their fleets with electric drives. Pendix is already represented in many federal states in this regard.
