Spectrum / cycle tours: Germany's most popular long-distance cycle path has been even more attractive and safer since Friday. Thanks to the Elberadweg gap closure between Königstein and Bad Schandau, cyclists no longer have to switch to the main road in this area. The new section was inaugurated by Saxony's Minister of Transport, Martin Dulig, the mayors and the Tourism Association of Saxon Switzerland
The Tourismusverband Sächsische Schweiz eV has been fighting for years to close the gap between Bad Schandau and the Königstein amusement park. The evasion of the cyclists onto the busy main road was annoying and unattractive for the travelers at the same time. With the new 2,4 kilometer long section, the Elbe Cycle Path, which is very popular with cyclists, has gained considerably in terms of safety and attractiveness. However, the last construction phase in particular proved to be very demanding when it was implemented by the State Office for Road Construction and Transport. In doing so, the high requirements regarding monument, nature and flood protection had to be ideally reconciled. Among other things, an approximately 800 meter long old towpath between the railway embankment and the Elbe was expanded.
An investment that pays off: With around 150.000 users a year, the Elbe Cycle Path plays an important role in tourism in the region. Despite the new section of the Elbe Cycle Path, the Tourismusverband Sächsische Schweiz eV sees further need for action. Equally important is the expansion of the entire cycle network in Saxon Switzerland. Chairman Klaus Brähmig comments on this: “The number of users of the Elbe Cycle Path shows us the great potential that lies in cycle tourism for the region. In order to take advantage of this, we have to refine the cycle tourism offer in the region. If we add other attractive cycle paths to the Elbe Cycle Path, such as a Gottleuba cycle path, we can expect cycle tourists to stay longer in the region and thus greater added value.”
