Bikepacking bags on test: Pro Discover Bags

March 12, 2022 by Florian Nowak

Bikepacking bags under test: Discover is how Shimano's own brand PRO calls its products for gravel use. It goes without saying that the bikepacking equipment from PRO can also be found in this category, because what would you need this multitude of different bags for if not for discovery trips and adventures.

The PRO bikepacking bags in the Discover Team lineup are primarily characterized by their robust yet lightweight design. This may also initially give you the feeling that the pockets could tear, since the upper material feels really very thin.

Extremely robust and yet light as a feather

But wrong thought, because that is by no means the case. In our test, the bags were particularly convincing due to their tear resistance. In order to prevent moisture from penetrating from the outside, all bags in the new PRO Discover Team range have welded seams and are therefore also extremely waterproof in combination with the material. All this despite the fact that each bag also stands out due to its extremely low weight.

Bikepacking Bags Pro

The Pro Bikepacking bag series consists of three different models with top tube, frame and saddle bag. With a volume of 700 milliliters, the small top tube bag offers enough space and a clever solution for things like smartphones or energy bars that need to be close at hand. The smooth-running, zip-like system can also be used while driving without any problems. Due to the attachment to the upper and head tube with Velcro strips, the bag fits very securely, but can affect the steering behavior and handling here and there.

For those who want to take even more items with them on their bikepacking adventure, the Discover frame bag with its 5,5 liters offers ample storage space and at the same time the best protection against moisture and dirt. However, due to the thin upper material, you should not put any fragile objects in the bag, as there is only little cushioning here. Here, too, assembly is quick and easy using Velcro strips and ensures a solid hold.

Be careful with the saddle bag!

Bikepacking Bags Pro

The saddlebag offers the most space, which despite its volume of 10 liters only weighs 200 grams. Thanks to the elastic bands on the outside, additional accessories can also be attached to the outside of the bag. However, you should be extremely careful about what you put in or attach, because on the one hand the objects shouldn't be too heavy and on the other hand they shouldn't be fragile. The reason for this: During our test rides, it happened that the bag swayed back and forth and even fell off at one point. So here the velcro system and the stabilization of the bag didn't work really well, especially when you have a bit more luggage with you, as it just can't be tightened enough.
