Bikepacking bags in the test: The German manufacturer Ortlieb focuses on robust quality and waterproof features in its extensive bikepacking range. From handlebar to frame to saddlebags, there is something for everyone. Everything Made in Germany!
For our setup we decided on frames, saddles and fork bags. Starting at the front of the bike, we find plenty of space for a lot of utensils in the two fork pockets, each with around 4 liters of storage space. However, you should note that despite the generous storage space, you should not store any heavy items in these bags, as this has a major impact on the steering performance and driving experience. Installation is quick and easy thanks to our own Quick-Lock S adapter system. The fork must either have eyelets ready for mounting, or you can also mount the bags on forks without special screw mounts using the so-called QLS adapter. However, the pipes must have a constant diameter of 30 mm to 42 mm.
Waterproof and robust
The storage space in the frame triangle can also be used perfectly with the Frame Pack and you can choose between 4 or 6 liters. In contrast to the fork pockets, there is space here for heavy objects in particular, since the proximity to the frame means that you hardly have any influence on the driving experience. In particular, the processed nylon fabric, which can also be found in the other Ortlieb products, is clearly one of the highlights here. Especially in combination with the welded seams and the waterproof zip, you are equipped with the Ortlieb bags for any adventure, no matter how difficult. Particularly exciting: At Ortlieb, they simply rely on a stable Velcro system, which provides a good hold and keeps everything in place without frills.
Strong Velcro system for a stable hold
The same applies to the saddlebag, which should definitely not be missing on bikepacking adventures, but often severely impairs the ride by swinging out and having little stability. The Ortlieb system is also convincing here, because the seat pack is simply attached to the seat post with extra strong Velcro fasteners. In order to be able to reduce the filled bag to a minimum, a small valve is used, which simply provides compression and even more compactness. If there isn't enough space in the bag or if you don't want to pack a wet piece of clothing, you can easily attach this and other belongings to the thanks to the elastic cord attachment.
