First Ride/Product News POC Ventral: After the POC Octal was four years old, it was time for the Swedish manufacturer to develop a new racing bike helmet. The new POC Ventral was developed with the help of proven technologies and thanks to valuable athlete feedback. Velomotion was allowed to test drive the eye-catching aero helmet for a first test.
The POC Ventral aims to set new standards in terms of speed, safety and ventilation. With its unique construction and optimized aerodynamic properties, such as the use of the Venturi effect, it is designed to increase speed and safety when cycling.
The partnership and collaboration with the EF Education First - Drapac p/b Cannondale Pro Cycling Team was instrumental in the product development and technical design of the helmet. The team works in a unique environment, trimmed for maximum performance, and enables POC to continuously develop its products.
POC ventral properties
The development of the POC Ventral was based on four basic properties that make a first-class bike helmet: The aim was to optimize aerodynamics, ventilation, safety and weight and to make every rider faster and safer as a whole.
POC Ventral - Aerodynamics
Crucial to the aerodynamic performance is the unique design and the precise size and angles of the frontal vents. These direct airflow through the helmet instead of around it. By capturing and channeling air through specially designed internal channels, the Ventral improves aerodynamic properties and reduces drag. The residual air flowing over and around the helmet is directed via the optimized spoiler, which reduces air turbulence and thus maintains a linear airflow from the helmet and rider.
POC Ventral - Ventilation
The front vents combined with the internal air channels also ensure excellent ventilation and cooling, improving the overall performance of the helmet. Inspired by the Venturi effect, the specific airflow channels create precise pressure zones that increase airflow speed and promote cooling inside the helmet. The design of the rear vents has been specifically tuned for the channeled air. The combination of internal and external airflow at the back of the helmet improves ventilation and reduces drag while riding.
POC Ventral - Safety
The security aspect represents POC's fundamental mission and is the cornerstone of all development and design processes. All POC helmets must meet the highest protection requirements. This means that all technologies are coordinated with the goal of maximum safety: material quality, unibody construction, specially compressed EPS zones, ergonomic straps, the individually adjustable adjustment system for the perfect fit or the practical eye garage for the sunglasses.
Product news: POC presents SPIN and Clarity - new technologies for better protection
Market: The Swedish company POC has been supplying the market with new technologies to protect athletes since 2005. The focus in summer 2018 was placed on the head section. The newly developed spin system ensures greater safety in falls with an angle of impact. The new Clarity causes a stir with increased color intensity […]
With SPIN, POC's patent-pending anti-rotation system, the Ventral is additionally optimized for protection in linear as well as oblique falls. By using innovative pad technology, which fits directly against the head and can shear in any direction, the helmet is allowed to move relative to the head, which can reduce the rotational energy acting on the brain during an angled impact . The SPIN Pads replace conventional pads, making additional attachments unnecessary and do not affect the airflow inside the helmet. They also offer a high level of comfort and excellent sweat absorption.
POC Ventral - Weight
The goal was to design an outstanding, aerodynamically ventilated helmet that offers a variety of functions for cycling, protects against linear and oblique impacts and is also very light. The Ventral was optimized during the development process so that it weighs just 250 grams (size M).
POC Ventral - First Ride
The POC Ventral will be worn by the WorldTour Team EF Education First – Drapac p/b Cannondale for the first time from March 4th at Paris-Nice. In addition to the POC Vental, the team will also use the other POC helmets, such as the Octal, Cerebel and Octal Aero, depending on the race and conditions in training and competition. However, we already had the opportunity to test the new helmet and test drive it. Of course, due to the advance praise, we approached the matter with very high expectations and we can confidently say that even after a short test we are fully convinced of the new POC model.
An important indicator for us is always how the helmet fits the first time you put it on and what adjustment options there are, because a helmet can still have so many outstanding features, if it doesn't fit or is uncomfortable to wear, it's not a good helmet. We only missed the adjustment of the side straps on the POC Ventral, otherwise the helmet should be able to cover a wide range of fits. You could also literally feel the light weight, which together with the proper individual adjustment ensures that you have the feeling of actually not wearing a helmet. And the ventilation also seems to work extremely well, as you can feel the air entering the helmet through the large openings. In order to be able to form a more accurate judgment, however, we will probably have to wait for a ride in hotter temperatures. After the first impression we can rightly say that the POC Ventral has the best basic requirements to establish itself as a top racing bike helmet.
