Modolo celebrates his first win of the season – for real this time!
Two mountain classifications had to be crossed today at the Ruta del Sol. These were roughly in the middle of the stage so they had no impact on the action of the race. All the experts expected a mass sprint on the 166,1-kilometer stretch from Mancha Real to Herrera. This is what the runaways wanted Alvaro Cuadros (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), Hector Saez (Euskadi Basque Country-Murias) and Marco Minnaaard (Wanty-Groupe Gobert). However, ten kilometers before the finish, they all came together and the mass sprint was prepared. In the middle of the peloton there was a fall in the last left turn. However, the sprint at the front was not affected. Sacha Modolo (EF Education First-Drapac p/b Cannondale) took the lead at the right moment and couldn't be overtaken. The Italian celebrates his first win of the season. The Spaniard came second charles barber (Movistar) in front of the Colombian Nelson Andres Soto (Caja Rural Seguros RGA).
Ruta del Sol 2018: Poels remains in front, the tension remains
Nachdem Wout poels yesterday the second stage of the Ruta del Sol was able to win, he still leads the overall ranking after today's stage. The professional from Team Sky is far from certain of the overall victory. After all, well-known drivers are breathing down his neck. Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana) has just like Tim Wellens (Lotto Soudal) only two seconds behind. Mikel Landa (Movistar) and Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) are just four seconds behind. Self Chris Froome (Sky) is still in the running, 27 seconds down. Tomorrow at the Ruta del Sol the focus will be a little more on the climbers. On the 194,7 kilometers from Seville to Alcalá de los Gazules, two climbs have to be passed in the middle of the race. The last kilometer is uphill again. However, the overall ranking will only be decided on the last day of the tour. 14,2 kilometers of time trials are on the agenda in Barbate on Sunday.
