cycling: Cadel Evans Road Race: McCarthy faster than the sprinters

Cycling: Jay McCarthy brought the next victory to the German team Bora-hansgrohe. The Australian won the first one-day race of the WorldTour season at home. In the Cadel Evans Road Race, the 25-year-old was faster than the actual sprinters in a small group sprint.

McCarthy succeeds Arndt

After in last year Nickias Arndt (Sunweb) won the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, this time a driver from a German team won again. Jay McCarthy (Bora-hansgrohe) actually wanted to triumph at the Tour Down Under, but about two weeks ago he went up to Willunga Hill on the fifth stage the air out. That wasn't the case today. On the contrary: Jay McCarthy still had the most reserves of all the professionals in the top group. There is no other way to explain why the Australian was able to win the sprint against well-known competitors. The trio determined the breakaway Alexander Porter (KordaMentha Australian Team), Let Norman Hansen (Aqua Blue Sport) and Pavel Kochetov (Katusha-Alpecin) has been racing for a long time. However, the interests of the teams in the peloton were too great to land such a coup.

Viviani with surprising defeat

Constantly increasing the pace, the field flew further and further apart hill by hill. Ultimately, eleven men remained in the first group before the decisive sprint in Geelong. A driver from Katusha-Alpecin ventured into the wind much too early. Jay McCarthy took this opportunity and attached himself to his rear wheel. Elia Viviani (Quick-Step Floors) was late. Although he should have been the significantly faster man on paper, he was no longer able to sprint past McCarthy. His look at winner McCarthy right after crossing the finish line spoke volumes. came third Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott), the winner of the Tour Down Under. Last year's winner Nikias Arndt finished sixth. Another notable result Bjorg Lambrecht (Lotto Soudal). The Belgian competed in his first WorldTour race and finished 19th on this difficult profile.
