Product news: Specialized Turbo Levo Carbon – E-MTB from 2018 also made of carbon

July 17, 2017 by Michael Faiss

Market / E-Performance: With the Specialized Turbo Levo Carbon, the well-known Levo E-MTB is now also celebrating its carbon fiber premiere. This saves up to 650g of weight on the frame and all 2018 Levo models also receive a comprehensive motor update, which should ensure 15% more power and better heat dissipation.

A little over two years after its debut, the Specialized Turbo Levo FSR gets its first major update. Until now, the E-MTB was only available with an aluminum frame, but from the 2018 season there will also be a light carbon fiber frame. In addition, improvements have also been made to the engine: software and hardware updates tickle up to 15% more power out of the drive - and at the same time improved heat management.

Specialized Turbo Levo Carbon: Up to 650 grams lighter

Until a few years ago, carbon as a frame material was reserved almost exclusively for lightweight builders. In the recent past, the light and at the same time stiff material has also been able to assert itself on a broader market and is now becoming increasingly popular even in the downhill area. No wonder: Modern manufacturing processes allow manufacturers to use carbon to construct new frame shapes - and the frames are usually even stiffer than their aluminum counterparts while being lighter. Exactly these advantages now also apply to the 2018 Specialized Turbo Levo Carbon; the S-Works frame with main frame and rear triangle made of carbon weighs 650 grams less than the already very light aluminum frame. The main frame alone is already 500g lighter. However, stability and rigidity do not suffer from the slimming diet: According to Specialized, the Levo Karbon should even be stiffer than the aluminum version. Also in 2018, all Levo models will be delivered with the wide 6fattie Plus tires as standard, but are also 29″ compatible.

Specialized Turbo Levo 2018: more power with less heat for the engine

All 2018 Levo models - including those with an aluminum frame - come with the new 1.3 engine. This should bring up to 15% more power and also not get as hot as its predecessor - that would eliminate the two main points of criticism of the previous drive. This is made possible by a few small hardware updates such as new magnets and thermal pads in the important places. In addition, a software update brings more efficient control. Of course, the very good Mission Control app will continue to be used in 2018.
