Market / E-Performance: Bosch E-Bike Systems recently presented the innovations for the 2018 season. In addition to the widely acclaimed E-Bike ABS, two new drives were also presented. The third major innovation is the first integrable battery called PowerTube 500. In addition, the eShift integration of Shimano's Di2 components is being promoted.
It is probably one of the most anticipated innovations in the Bosch e-bike universe: a battery that can be integrated into the frame. There had been rumors for quite a while, but now the Swabians have officially presented the PowerTube 500. Due to its compact and elongated design, the 500Wh battery can be easily integrated into bicycle frames - for example into the down tube. The energy supplier is optimized for a wide range of applications, from the comfortable city cruiser to the e-enduro. With a weight of approx. 2,8kg, it is also one of the lightest batteries on the market.

Bosch has given some thought to assembly, attachment and removal. The result is a two-stage mechanism: If you open the battery lock, the battery clicks a few centimeters out of the frame and can be removed quickly and easily. Very practical, for example, when you go on a longer tour and have to switch to a full second battery. Speaking of the second battery: The PowerTube 500 is also compatible with Bosch's Dual Battery System: For example, bicycle manufacturers can place the new integrated battery on the seat tube and attach a normal, external battery to the down tube as usual. So you get twice the capacity, but at first glance you only see one battery.
Bosch eShift now with Shimano XT(R) Di2 and Rohloff E-14
The specially developed electronic switching function eShift has also been fine-tuned. This is an interface between the electronic groupset on the bike and the drive itself. The advantage is much smoother gear changes that are gentler on the material. What is new for 2018 is that the eShift function will also be available for Shimano's MTB Di2 groupsets XT Di2 and XTR Di2. As befits such gearshifts and bicycles, the eShift function here is designed for sporty use.
Also completely new is the compatibility with the electronic endurance hub from the premium manufacturer Rohloff. "With the Rohloff version of the eShift, we are targeting eBikers who value performance, high shifting comfort and fast, crisp gear changes. In addition, there is an enormous transmission range of 526 percent - this is unique for a pedelec with hub gears," says Claus Fleischer, Managing Director of Bosch eBike Systems.
