Cycling: The US cycling team Rally Cycling caused a big surprise on the 4th stage of the Tour of California. With a double victory for Evan Huffman and Rob Britton, they prevented the actually expected mass sprint in Santa Clarita.
The sprinter teams misjudge
The 4th stage took the riders almost 160 kilometers from Santa Barbara to Santa Clarita. A mass sprint and thus a meeting of the top stars was actually expected in advance, as was already the case at the 1th stage. Evan Huffman won ahead of teammate Rob Britton from a five-man breakaway. This formed right from the start. The sprinter teams gambled and started the tracking work too late. Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) won the sprint for sixth place ahead of the two Germans John Degenkolb (Trek-Segafredo) and Marcel Kittel (Quick-Step Floors). There were no changes in the top 10 overall. Rafal Majka (Bora-hansgrohe) remains in the overall leader's yellow jersey. His team-mate Peter Sagan leads the sprint classification ahead of Marcel Kittel. Daniel Alexander Jaramillo (UnitedHealthcare) is in first place in the mountains classification.
Mountain finish tomorrow: Can Rafal Majka defend his yellow jersey?
On tomorrow's stage, the preliminary decision of the Tour of California 2017 will be made in the battle for overall victory. Only 125,5 kilometers have to be completed, but the profile is all the more demanding. After starting in Ontario, two mountains of the first category have to be climbed. At the end of the day we go up Mount Baldy, which belongs to the highest category. With a length of 8,2 kilometers and an average gradient of 8,4 percent, only the best climbers should be able to assert themselves here. The day after, the 6th stage features a 24-kilometer time trial. Even if Rafal Majka is a reasonable time trialist, he certainly cannot rest on his slender lead. Therefore, the Polish champion and winner of the 2st stage fighting for every second on Mount Baldy. Germany's Maximilian Schachmann (Quick-Step Floors) will try to defend his XNUMXth place overall.
