Cycling: Surprise at the Tour of California. Kasper Asgreen (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) took over the yellow jersey after winning today's mountain stage. The German Maximilian Schachmann (Bora – hansgrohe) finished fifth and is within striking distance in the overall classification.
Asgreen keeps the upper hand in an exciting mountain stage
With a win of Kasper Asgreen only a few would have expected today. On the way from Rancho Cordova to South Lake Tahoe, there was more than 214,5 meters of altitude to climb over a distance of 5.000 kilometers. In the end, however, it was not a proven mountaineer who cheered - but that Kasper Asgreen (Deceuninck - Quick-Step). The Dane rode extremely actively throughout the stage, responded to several attacks and finally defeated in the uphill sprint Tejay Van Garderen (EF Education First) and Gianni moscon (Ineo). The German Maximilian schachmann (Bora – hansgrohe) drove behind Tadej pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) in fifth, 16 seconds back. Kasper Asgreen now also leads the overall ranking. The favourites Rigoberto Urán (EF Education First), Richie porte (Trek – Segafredo) and Rohan Dennis (Bahrain – Merida) lost 31 and 38 seconds respectively.
