The Pearl Izumi MTB WRX Jacket was one of the lightest and thinnest jackets in our test: The material developed in-house offers a comfortable stretch, is said to be highly breathable and waterproof at the same time. In any case, it is extremely comfortable to wear on the skin – anyway, the jacket is one of the most comfortable that we had in the test. The cut is discreetly sporty, but definitely suitable for everyday use: That's not surprising, after all, as the name suggests, the MTB WRX was designed for use on mountain bikes. This is also supported by the generously dimensioned sleeves, which offer more than enough space for any protectors.
The developers did a really good job with the hood: Thanks to the stretchy material, it fits over the helmet like a second skin – regardless of whether it’s a compact racing bike helmet or an MTB model that’s pulled deep into the neck. There are ventilation openings under the arms, which are covered with a flap - these cannot be closed, which is why the Pearl Izumi jacket is really more for warm days - in autumn and winter you need another layer of clothing underneath anyway because of the thin material.
We think it's a bit of a shame that the MTB WRX doesn't have any pockets at all - that's quite limiting in everyday life and a little storage space in the jacket can also be quite useful on the trail. The weather protection of the jacket is very good, especially when new, water doesn't stand a chance and rolls off completely, even from the smooth-running, but nevertheless sealed zipper. However, the membrane reaches its limits in heavy rain in combination with a backpack - where the straps rub, the material gives way after a while and the inside gets slightly damp. However, this case really only occurred in heavy rain - moderate showers are not a problem.
