Bahn News: The German athletes are still waiting for gold at the 2015 European Championships in Grenchen – Joachim Eilers and Domenic Weinstein were still successful. Two silver medals at the end of the day: in the individual pursuit and in the men's 1000 m time trial.
Even though Germany is still a long way off from winning its first European Championship title in Grenchen, the athletes are steadily increasing their haul of medals. Today there were two Vice European Champion titles - for Domenic Weinstein and Joachim Eilers.
Weinstein, the German single pursuit champion, had shown his very strong form just two weeks ago during preparation for the tournament at the Velodrome Suisse when he set a new German record in the 4:17,417 in the 4000m single pursuit. Today he also managed to implement the performance at the European Championships and the 21-year-old made it through to the final with absolute confidence. However, the world champion and local hero Stefan Küng was waiting there, against whom he ultimately had no chance. Nevertheless, the native of the Black Forest had reason to celebrate today: "The silver medal was a giant step for me," says Weinstein, who was even able to take his defeat with humor: "I was hoping he'd be a little slower," he said with a grin on his face. Third place and bronze went to Dion Beukeboomin from the Netherlands.
Joachim Eilers also had reason to celebrate today. The 25-year-old is the new Vice European Champion in the 1000m time trial. With a time of 1:00,569, he just barely missed gold – the new European Champion Jeffrey Hoogland was only two tenths of a second faster. It was also close behind and Maximilian Dörnbach almost secured a second medal for Germany, but in the end he was seven tenths short of third place, Robin Wagner from the Czech Republic.
For Maximilan Levy and Miriam Welte, the European Championship has come to an early end. While Levy is in a form crisis and had to give up yesterday in the sprint in the 1/16 final, Miriam Welte has been struggling with an injury since the beginning of the tournament, which she sustained a few days before the start. A mishap while making tea resulted in second-degree burns on her right leg, forcing the multiple world champion to retire early.
