European Track Cycling Championships in Apeldoorn: Hat trick also for Kluge/Reinhardt in Madison

12 January 2024 by Michael Behringer

European Track Cycling Championships Kluge Reinhardt Madison

Cycling: The Association of German Cyclists can also look forward to a gold medal on the second day of the European Track Cycling Championships in Apeldoorn. Roger Kluge and Theo Reinhardt were able to successfully defend their Madison title. The women's foursome can also look forward to bronze.

Kluge/Reinhardt celebrate the hat trick in Madison

After the team sprinters were able to celebrate their hat trick yesterday, today it was the turn of the Kluge/Reinhardt duo. Roger Kluge and Theo Reinhardt won the gold medal in the Madison in Munich 2022 and Grenchen 2023 for the third time in a row. In the Madison, after 200 laps, they were ahead of the French Boudat/Grondin and the Danes Morkov/Storm.

Roger Kluge:
“We know what we can do. To win, you have to run an optimal race. We approached it a little more defensively and just saw how things went. After we scored the first points, we knew where we stood. At the end it was exciting again because the French were close behind, but with the final score we made it clear. It certainly wasn't as confident today as it was in Munich. We had more fun there. It was a fight to the end. We're exhausted now, but it's indescribable that we've achieved this. A historic victory.”

Women's foursome wins bronze, men's foursome misses out on a medal

You can also look forward to the second day of the European Track Championships Franziska Brauße, Lisa Klein, Laura Süßemilch, Lena Charlotte Reißner and Mieke Kröger. With a big lead over Ireland, the women's foursome won the bronze medal in Apeldoorn. Italy secured the title ahead of Great Britain. In the men's team pursuit it ultimately wasn't enough for a medal. Tobias Buck-Gramcko, Nico Heinrich, Felix Groß and Tim Torn Teutenberg narrowly lost out against Italy. Gold went to Great Britain ahead of Denmark.

national coach Andre Korff about the performance of the women's foursome:
“We are one step closer to qualifying for the Olympics. The bronze medal was the goal. We are fully out of the training phase and are still a long way from what will be required of us in the summer.”

Last warm up, now it's time to ride
