Markt: It is probably one of the largest and at the same time perhaps one of the most absurd recall campaigns in recent years. US manufacturer Trek is recalling more than a million bicycles worldwide - numerous Trek bikes with disc brakes and quick-releases on the front wheel have been affected since 1999. The background to this are three accidents resulting in injuries in the USA, to which the local consumer protection authority has now reacted.
The faulty or problematic part is the built-in quick release on the front wheel - if this is not properly closed and loosens while driving, the lever can get caught in the brake disc and thus block the wheel because the lever turns around opens more than 180°. According to the manufacturer, the error can only occur if the quick release is not properly closed. It remains to be seen whether it is really the fault of the manufacturer if the driver is on the road with an open quick-release.
Nevertheless, an exchange can be worthwhile for the owner: In addition to a free new quick release, there is also a €20 voucher for any Bontrager product at the Trek dealer, which is valid until December 31 of this year.
