Trek E Caliber: Super light cross country e-bike

February 25, 2021 by the editorial office

E-Performance: You don't want to have a 25kg e-bike under your feet but you want the agility of a super-light cross-country racer? Neither is really possible, but there is a wide range in between and this is exactly the range that Trek wants to cover with the E-Caliber cross country e-bike. does it work?

Trek wants to close the gap between the massive e-mountain bikes and the sprint-friendly XC bikes. With this idea, the concept of the E-Caliber was born and is based on well-known principles of E-Road Bikes. With an ultra-light Fazua drive, the Americans don't have a performance bigwig on board, but they do have enormous flexibility.

The Fazua Black Pepper drive is light and serves as a support in this concept when it gets too steep or too far. As a small extra dose of power, so to speak. But even if you deliberately want to be on the road without support, the drive decouples without resistance and the battery can be removed and replaced with a cover. This is how you save weight!

A lot of work has been done on the weight, because the entire e-bike in the top version 9.9 XX1 AXS weighs just over 15kg and that with battery and drive.

Trek E-Caliber: Fazua Black Pepper Drive

More performance, full individuality and an even more natural driving experience. With incorporated biomechanical principles and intelligent formulas - this is the 2020 brand new "Black Pepper" motor software from the e-bike drive manufacturer FAZUA GmbH from Ottobrunn just outside Munich.

Here are the details:

  • Power: The compact unit delivers a maximum torque of 55 Nm and a maximum power of 300 watts (mechanical) / 450 watts (electrical). A maximum of 250 watts (mechanical) is specified in the basic setting and can be adjusted to the personal needs of the driver in the customizer.
  • Cadence range: The evation drive system delivers constant motor power over a cadence range of 55-125 revolutions per minute and therefore does not limit the rider to pedal in his preferred cadence range.
  • Driving dynamics: Complex algorithms that adapt the support perfectly to the individual pedaling style of the driver. This ensures a driving experience that is characterized by gentle, natural support. Above 25km/h, the motor and bottom bracket are completely decoupled from each other so that there is no resistance while riding.

The preset assistance characteristics of the three assistance modes are uniquely designed to ensure the ideal level of assistance for every driving scenario:

  • Breeze (Brise): Gentle, constant tailwind of up to 100 watts, even with low rider performance.
  • River: Progressive and very sporty mode, for a smooth driving experience! The strenght
the support follows exactly the driver's own input power. Give a lot – and get a lot from the engine (max 210 W)
  • Rocket: Powerful support that helps moderate rider strength to tackle the steepest sections (max. 250 W)

With the Toolbox software it is possible to customize the support modes. The driving dynamics of the drive can be adapted to the personal needs and preferences of the driver via the parameters Max Power, Support Relation and Ramp-Up.

“We are constantly looking for the perfect driving experience: A support that is in complete harmony with the driver's own physical performance. With the Black Pepper software, we have come a big step closer to this vision and further updates will follow," says Johannes Biechele, Managing Director at FAZUA.

Trek E-Caliber: geometry table

With the relatively flat and long geometry, it is definitely designed for propulsion. The E-Caliber is very similar to the geometry data of the Trek Super-Caliber and thus a thoroughbred cross-country and marathon bike. The reach of the E-Caliber is a bit longer, which also means that the steering angle is flatter.
