Bahn-News: Yesterday, the European cycling association announced at its annual congress that the EM 2017 will take place in the Berlin Velodrome. It is a first, because this competition has never been awarded to Germany before. It will also be the first such major international event in the velodrome since the 1999 World Championships.
In a provisional schedule, the EM 2017 was scheduled for October 19th. For four days - ie until October 22nd - the international starting field of Olympic and world champions will fight for 17 titles in the German capital. The joy among those responsible is of course great: "We are pleased that this award was the starting signal to be able to use the fantastic Velodrome in Berlin again for a major international cycling event in addition to the annual six-day race. With this momentum and the support of the Senate, we will now also try to bring the Track World Championships to Berlin in the Olympic year 2020,said BDR General Secretary Martin Wolf.
But positive voices are not only coming from BDR circles. The city of Berlin is also pleased with the award, as Frank Henkel, Senator for the Interior and Sports of the City of Berlin, said: "I am delighted that with the European Track Cycling Championships 2017 we can add another sporting highlight to the calendar of events in Berlin." He also builds on the Berlin audience, which makes the six-day race a spectacle year after year: "I'm sure that the sports-loving Berlin audience will provide an appropriate setting."
According to the reports from the weekend, the drivers may even be able to use the new Berlin airport at this point - but we'll be surprised.
