Test: A look out of the window indicates that autumn is near and thus the beginning of the cross season. For this reason, we would like to introduce you to another tire that has accompanied us, especially on wet surfaces. We're talking about the Vittoria Cross XL Pro.
The 31 millimeter wide Cross XL Pro is the clincher version of the mud tube tire Cross XL. For this reason it is provided with the same coarse profile lugs. These are applied to the carcass in such a way that they guarantee good self-cleaning.
In our case, the rubber compound guarantees good grip if the ground is damp or wet. Accelerations, hard braking maneuvers and tight corners can be done with the Cross XL Pro face calmly. It is also nice that you can ride it with relatively low air pressure. On asphalt, the tire hums along frugally due to the coarse profile, but without appearing slow.
The properties that the Cross XL Pro shows can impress, especially in training. We tried it in the race, but tubular tires and lighter wheels make the difference here. The weight of 430 grams is just a shortcoming.
Conclusion
The Vittoria Cross XL Pro offers good grip on wet floors and thus conveys a high level of safety. In addition, it is anything but prone to breakdowns and is therefore a good companion in training. However, it is a bit too heavy for racing.
