Javier Gomez didn't show any weaknesses in Cozumel either. After the swim, the Spaniard was in the first chasing group. Meanwhile, Tommy Zaferes (USA) and Marcus Vinicius Fernandes (BRA) had pulled away at the front. But then everything rolled back together on the bike until Gregor Buchholz (GER), Carlos Arcadia (MEX), Travis Johnson (RSA), Fabio Carvalho (BRA) and Oscar David Preciado (COL) decided to flee to the front. However, their lead should not be enough. Thanks to a strong running result, Gomez prevailed in the end ahead of Aurelien Lescure (FRA) and Dmitry Polyanskiy (RUS).
"It was a really tough race", Gomez reported at the finish. "I was completely exhausted at the end, but I tried to give everything again in the last 100 meters." For short-distance world champion Gomez, the season ends as it began in Auckland with a win.
The Swiss Nicola Spirig won the women's race. The best German was Rebecca Robisch in sixth place.
