Triathlon: Javier Gomez has secured the overall victory of the World Triathlon Series for the fourth time. At the race in Edmonton, however, he had to admit defeat to the British Alistair Brownlee and Mario Mola.
From the start, the Olympic champion controlled the race from the front and not only got Gomez into trouble, but also his brother Jonathan Brownlee. However, both were able to catch up on the bike again.
In an extremely tactical race, Alistair Brownlee then managed to tear a hole before the second substitution. In the final run, the Briton left nothing to chance. Behind them, Mola and Gomez joined forces and put Jonathan Brownlee under pressure. This one didn't have the legs and in the end had nothing to do with the podium award.
Third place saw Gomez defend his world title from the previous year. In the women's category, however, there was a new title holder. Gwen Jorgenson was already well ahead before the race and underlined her position in the race as well. In the end, the American won easily ahead of Andrea Hewitt and Nicky Samuels from New Zealand.
