The Kenyan-born Briton Chris Froome (Sky) notched up several impressive victories this year – but triumphing in the Tour de France was certainly the icing on the cake of his season. He has now been awarded the Velo d'Or for his successes. The prize is one of the most important honors in the scene.
Froome was honored by a panel of experts as the most successful driver of the 2014 season, following in the footsteps of his Sky team-mate Sir Bradley Wiggins, who received the award a year ago, and Belgian classics specialist Philippe Gilbert (BMC).
The Colombian Nairo Quintana (Movistar) was honored as the best young driver. At his first participation in the Tour de France, the climbing talent finished second overall. He also showed strong performances at the beginning of the season and secured, among other things, the overall victory of the Tour of the Basque Country.
