Test: Fizik Vento Ferox Carbon: The light XC, gravel and cross shoe

July 26, 2023 by Patrick Storm

Test / Clothing: With the Vento Ferox Carbon, Fizik is not only launching a fast-looking shoe for XC, Gravel and Cross use. But also convinced us in the test with a stiff sole, light construction and some other properties. All information is here.

With the Vento Ferox Carbon, Fizik offers a light and very stiff XC, Gravel and Cross shoe. Particular attention was paid to a very stiff sole for optimal power transmission. This is achieved with a carbon sole which is rubberized on the underside, so you have the necessary grip even off-road if you have to get off the saddle. The stiffness index of the sole is 10 (maximum value 12 but this is usually only used for racing shoes).

The sole is equipped with a standard mount for all SPD systems. The adjustment range for the cleats is very generous, so that everyone can find a suitable position.

Physics

The upper is made from an extra durable mesh fabric over a PU laminated upper. The shoe is fitted to the foot with a powerstrap and a BOA system with the individual strength.

At just under 300 g, the shoe is one of the lightest representatives for gravel bikes.

The shoe is available starting with size 36 up to shoe size 48. Between sizes 37 to 47 also in half sizes. These are also necessary because the shoe allows little tolerance. Due to the stiff sole and the non-padded upper shoe, it is very important to have the right shoe size for your foot.

You can choose from three variants for the optics. We opted for the bright purple/white version. If you like it a bit simpler, you can get the Fizik Vento Ferox in mud/purple or in a classic black.

All of these features can be used with Fizik €299 RRP pay.

Test: Fizik Vento Ferox Carbon - On the trail

It took me a few tries to find the right cleat position, but I found it quickly. I mainly rode the shoe on my Gravler.

The high rigidity of the sole is noticeable from the first step. You can apply force to the pedal over the entire surface without the shoe bending or twisting. This reduces foot fatigue on longer rides.

The very bare, i.e. unpadded inside of the shoe takes some getting used to and initially caused my feet to hurt. I was able to compensate for this with slightly thicker socks.

Conclusion: Fizik Vento Ferox Carbon

Very successful shoe for XC, Gravel and Crosscycle use in a modern design. We were particularly impressed by the weight and stiffness and made themselves felt on the Gravel and XC rounds. Only the price is a small drop of bitterness.
