Cycling: Jonathan Milan has won the second stage of the Giro d'Italia. In the mass sprint, the Italian left David Dekker and Arne Marit behind. Leader Remco Evenepoel crossed the finish line with the peloton and was able to easily defend the Maglia Rosa.
Jonathan Milan celebrates at San Salvo
As expected, the second stage of the Giro d'Italia 2023 decided in a mass sprint. The breakaways were caught well before the finish line and the sprinter teams left no doubt that their captains would decide today's victory among themselves. After all, San Salvo had the best legs jonathan milan (Bahrain-Victorious). With his long sprint he left David Decker (Arkéa – Samsic) and Arne Marit (Intermarché – Circus – Wanty) behind. The riders survived the entire day without falling – up to 3,5 kilometers from the finish. Then a wave in the peloton caused a fall that stopped many riders. Therefore, the group that ultimately fought for the day's victory was significantly smaller than usual.
Five hopeless escapees
Five courageous breakaways dared to go on the offensive right at the beginning of the 202-kilometer stage from Teramo to San Salvo. The French Paul Lapeira (AG2R – Citroën) and Thomas Champion (Cofidis), as well as the Italians Mattia Bais (Eolo – cometa), Alessandro Verre (Arkéa – Samsic) and Stefano Gandín (Corratec – Selle Italia) were only awarded a few minutes. In the main draw, the sprinter teams formed up early, so that Leader Remco Evenepoel (Soudal – Quick-Step) had little to do. The escapees were caught 38 kilometers before the finish line. At least Paul Lapeira can talk about that mountain jersey looking forward to it, which he proudly carries on his shoulders on tomorrow's third stage.
