Cycling: Primoz Roglic won the time trial on the 20th stage of the Giro d'Italia and thus took over the pink jersey. The Slovenian was 40 seconds faster than Geraint Thomas near home. He now leads the overall standings with a lead of 11 seconds over the Briton.
Roglic wins despite technical drama
It was a spectacle over 18,6 kilometers. And the beaming winner on Monte Lussari is called Primois Roglic (Jumbo - Visma). The Slovenian not only won the time trial near his homeland, but also took over the pink jersey. Roglic was a whopping 40 seconds faster than the leader Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers). And that despite a technical defect that must have cost him around 10 seconds. He leads the overall standings with one day to go in the Giro d'Italia, 11 seconds ahead of the Briton. Despite the narrow lead, Geraint Thomas is not expected to attack tomorrow. It is an unwritten law that the overall leader will not be attacked on the last day.
Kämna is ninth overall
For Lennard Kamna (Bora – hansgrohe) the day was anything but perfect. The German had hoped to make up some more ground in the time trial. Instead, he lost another rank. He had to take the Norwegian Andreas Leknessund (DSM) let it pass. This means that Kämna will finish the Giro d'Italia in ninth place overall - a remarkable result nonetheless.
Three starting blocks, many motorcycles
The time trial up Monte Lussari was highly controversial. Even before the start of the Giro d'Italia, the organizers were heavily criticized. Many experts, but also professionals and team bosses saw this mountain time trial negatively. It was too difficult for many, but above all, many disliked the process. Since Monte Lussari cannot be climbed with cars, the support vehicles at the foot of the mountain had to be replaced with motorcycles. At the same time, the pros switched from their time trial machines to their mountain bikes. In addition, the fight against the clock had to be interrupted twice as planned. After all, the entire staff, including the motorcycles, had to drive back to the start. You can see today's spectacle as you like - this day will definitely remain in your memory.
