Cycling: This year the Giro d'Italia will be held for the 106th time - and it's quite a challenge. A whopping 3.489,2 kilometers have to be covered, 51.400 meters in altitude. In addition to two flat time trials, this time there is also a mountain time trial on the program - in addition to five mountain finishes!
The final week surpasses everything as usual
On Monday, October 17th, the course of the 106th Giro d'Italia was presented to the world public in Milan. Even if the Tour of Italy does not take place until May next year, drivers, fans and journalists followed the unveiling of the stage profiles with great interest. And there were indeed some surprises. At the Giro d'Italia 2023 we can expect a whopping 70,6 kilometers of time trials. However, the last fight against the clock on the 20th stage leads up Monte Lussari - a mountain time trial, which could bring the final decision in a game of seconds. As usual, the entire last Giro week was rock hard. Among other things, it is then a matter of mastering a stage with the finish on Monte Bondone, which is a tough one at over 5.200 meters in altitude. The fact that this is not the king's stage speaks volumes. Because only a few days later it's off to the mountains of the Three Peaks. The section over the Tre Cime di Lavaredo awaits climbers at around 5.500 meters in altitude.

There is also something for the sprinters
Surely the Giro d'Italia 2023 is again a matter for the strong climbers. But the two flat time trials + the mountain time trial ensure that the upcoming Giro winner should also be well versed in the fight against the clock. In addition, the Tour of Italy also provides some stages for the sprinters. Six arrivals could end up in a bunch sprint. We could see the first Sprint Royal right on day two when the peloton reaches San Salvo at the Grand Partenza in Abruzzo.

All stage profiles at a glance
06.05.2023/1/XNUMX | XNUMXst stage | individual time trial
Fossacesia Marina - Ortona (19,6 km)
The 106th Giro d'Italia will start in 2023 in Fossacesia Marina. In Ortona, a port city in the Italian province of Chieti on the Adriatic coast, the first Maglia Rosa is awarded. The course is mostly flat. It only gets a bit more challenging at the end. Interesting is the decision of the organizers that they do not want to start the Giro with a prologue, but directly with a longer time trial. The classification drivers are already in demand here. Victory goes to a specialist.
Result:
With an impressive performance, Remco Evenepoel (Soudal – Quick-Step) took the day's win and the Maglia Rosa. Top favorite Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) finished second, a whopping 22 seconds back.

07.05.2023 | 2nd stage | flat
Teramo – San Salvo (202 km)
The second stage will also ensure beautiful pictures during the transmission. The main part of the route goes along the coast, which could cause wind edges and hectic in the field if you are unlucky. In San Salvo, however, there will inevitably be a bunch sprint.
Result:
Jonathan Milan (Bahrain - Victorious) is the name of the surprise winner of the second stage of the Giro d'Italia 2023. The Italian gives the Tifosi their first home win. There was a crash with 3,5 kilometers to go, causing some riders to lose time.
You can find the detailed article HERE.
08.05.2023 | 3rd stage | hilly
Vasto – Melfi (213 km)
We will most likely also see the third day winner on the third day of the Giro d'Italia. Because after the time trialists on the first day and the sprinters on the second day, the punchers or hill-proof sprinters will be successful today. Only those who do well in the two mountain classifications in the last quarter of the race can win the day in Melfi. The Australian Michael Matthews (Jayco – AlUla) marked this day in red in his calendar.
Result:
And sure enough, Michael Matthews (Jayco – AlUla) won the stage. The Australian narrowly beats Mads Pedersen (Trek – Segafredo) in the uphill sprint.

09.05.2023 | 4rd stage | hilly
Venosa – Lake Laceno (175 km)
The 4th stage is almost exclusively up and down. From Venosa to Lago Laceno, the good legs of the class riders are required. This is where the wheat will be separated from the chaff for the first time. Because even if there are no big gaps due to the short final climb, one or the other professional will certainly have to ask themselves today whether they are in good shape for the podium. The last 4,4 kilometers climb an average of 8,8 percent. Attacks guaranteed!
Result:
Jersey change: Remco Evenepoel (Soudal – Quick-Step) gave up his pink jersey to escapee Andreas Leknessund (DSM) today. However, the stage win went to Frenchman Aurélien Paret-Peintre (AG2R – Citröen).
Here's the full article on it.
10.05.2023 | 5nd stage | flat
Atripalda – Salerno (171 km)
Three quarters of today's stage of the Tour de France could also be a day in the Massif Central - a classic transitional stage. But here we are in Italy and fortunately - at least that's what the sprinters think - the last quarter of the race is less demanding. Nevertheless, the sprinters have to worry about their chance today. Only if their helpers do their job well can the breakaways be caught before the finish line in Salerno.
Result:
The fifth stage of the Giro d'Italia 2023 was marked by numerous falls. Among others, Remco Evenepoel (Soudal – Quick-Step) got caught twice – once because of a dog. In the last ten kilometers there were three more crashes. Mark Cavendish (Astana) was hit particularly hard on the finish line. Almost a minor matter: The day's victory went to Kaden Groves (Alpecin - Deceuninck) in a mass sprint.

11.05.2023 | 6nd stage | flat
Naples – Naples (162 km)
In Napoli today, the riders will not only eat delicious pasta, but also start and finish the sixth stage. In between, however, there are 162 kilometers, some of which are demanding. The Australian team Jayco – AlUla will be particularly in focus. Due to the hilly middle section, they should try to outperform the thoroughbred sprinters today. In the final sprint they hope for a day win from Michael Matthews. The sprinters, on the other hand, will do everything possible not to lose contact with the peloton. Of course, there is also a third part in this race: the escapees! In the end, a sprinter is happy in Napoli.
Result:
The spectators in Napoli saw an exciting fight between the breakaways and the sprinters. The duo was only caught 400 meters from the finish and Mads Pedersen (Trek – Segafredo) celebrates his first win of the day. In doing so, he completes his triple in the three major national tours.

Capua – Gran Sasso d'Italia (218 km)
The Gran Sasso d'Italia - in English: the big stone of Italy - awaits the drivers on the seventh day. Although the final climb looks scary, it probably won't cause too many fireworks. Because we can only expect attacks from the top favorites in the last few kilometers. Until you get to the steepest section, the uneven mountain is more of a rolling thing. Those who have a strong team at their side could harness their train up front and be piloted all the way to the final. Above all, Primoz Roglic (Jumbo – Visma) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal – Quick-Step) are addressed here.
Result:
Davide Bais (Eolo – Kometa) is the name of the sensational winner of the seventh stage of the Giro. The Italian arrived on the Gran Sasso d'Italia together with his companions. There he left her standing for the last few meters. While the breakaways gave us a great show, the favorites shone with boredom.
Here you can see the complete stage report.
13.05.2023 | 8rd stage | hilly
Terni – Fossombrone (207 km)
We lean out the window: Today, for the first time, a breakaway will celebrate the day's victory. The pure sprinters are annoyed about the hills just before the finish - but the fugitives are happy. The wildcard teams in particular will have marked this day in red on their calendars. Today is your big chance.
Result:
Ben Healy (EF Education – EasyPost) confidently wins stage eight of the Giro d'Italia 2023 as a soloist. And Primoz Roglic (Jumbo – Visma) successfully attacks Remco Evenepoel (Soudal – Quick-Step).
Here is the full race report.
14.05.2023/9/XNUMX | XNUMXst stage | individual time trial
Savignano Sul Rubicone - Cesena (35,0 km)
Before the pros can enjoy their first rest day, another important day for the classification riders is on the program with a 33,6 kilometer individual time trial. Many experts expect that Remco Evenepoel can look forward to a big lead on the first rest day. The world champion is a first-rate time trialist and should – if he is in form – hardly lose any time in the first nine stages. A specialist will still win today. Our tip: Filippo Ganna wins ahead of Stefan Küng.
Result:
In the time trial, Remco Evenepoel (Soudal – Quick-Step) fights back. However, he is not as convincing as expected. The explanation for this is in the evening: The world champion has Corona and leaves the Giro d'Italia 2023 in the pink jersey.
You can find the full race report here.
16.05.2023 | 10nd stage | flat
Scandiano – Viareggio (196 km)
After the rest day, the escapees are hoping for a chance to win the day again. The first half of the route profile gives you good cards, the second less so. After the mountain festival, the sprinter teams can turn up the heat and easily clock in around ten minutes. A pure sprinter will therefore win in Viareggio.
Result:
They strike again: Magnus Cort (EF Education - EasyPost) gives his team the next day's win. This completes his Grand Tour triple.
The detailed race report can be found here.
17.05.2023 | 11nd stage | flat
Camaiore – Tortona (219 km)
The classification drivers are allowed to rest today as well. Again, the fight between breakaway and sprinter determines the day. And again the teams of sprinters will probably be able to prevail.
Result:
Photo finish: Pascal Ackermann (UAE) gives Germany its first win at this year's Giro d'Italia. In the mass sprint, he came out on top of Jonathan Milan (Bahrain – Victorious) by a hair's breadth.
You can find the full race report here.
18.05.2023 | 12rd stage | hilly
Bra – Rivoli (179 km)
It is difficult to predict what will happen on the 179-kilometer course from Bra to Rivoli. If the breakaway group is well occupied, they will determine the day's victory among themselves. The teams of classic sprinters will fear the Colle Braida, because here their captain will no longer be able to follow if the pace increases. Therefore, a runaway cheers at the end. He has to be one of those drivers who can get over the mountains well and at the same time be good at sprinting.
Result:
And the next German victory: Nico Denz (Bora – hansgrohe) wins as a breakaway and is happy about a stage victory in a Grand Tour for the first time.
The exciting race report is available here.
19.05.2023/13/XNUMX | XNUMXth stage | mountainous
Borgofranco D'Ivrea - Crans Montana (207 km)
Even if the finale of this year's Giro d'Italia doesn't really take place until the final week, it's a little heralded today. With a length of 13 kilometers and an average incline of 7,4 percent, the Crans Montana is a real endurance test. The fact that two steep mountains have to be climbed beforehand makes the whole thing even more challenging. Anyone who was in top form too early will feel it for the first time today. We also know tonight who can win the mountain jersey.
Result:
A Rubio (Movistar) is the name of the winner of this shortened stage. The St. Bernhard could not be driven due to the weather, so the section had to be reduced to just 75 kilometers. Nevertheless, the race was exciting – especially right at the front in the fight for the day's victory.
You can find the detailed race report here.
20.05.2023 | 14nd stage | flat
Sierre – Cassano Magnano (194 km)
Only yesterday the sprinters had to suffer a lot without even remotely having a chance of winning. Today they suffer again at the beginning, but are allowed to fight for the day's victory in Cassano Magnano.
Result:
Again the sprinters get nothing. And again the day's victory goes to Nico Denz (Bora – hansgrohe). The German wins again as a breakaway and thus his second Grand Tour stage within three days. Bruno Armirail (Groupama – FDJ) can be happy about the pink jersey.
21.05.2023/15/XNUMX | XNUMXth stage | mountainous
Seregno – Bergamo (195 km)
The day before the second rest day is also the calm before the storm. The profile is too light for class riders and too heavy for sprinters. It's the perfect opportunity for another breakaway. There is no doubt that a man from the breakaway group will prevail in Bergamo.
Result:
As expected, the day was dominated by a large escape group. At the end, Brandon McNulty (UAE) celebrates the stage win.
Here is the detailed report about the race.
23.05.2023/16/XNUMX | XNUMXth stage | mountainous
Sabbio Chiese – Monte Bondone (203 km)
The final week of the Giro d'Italia begins on May 23 with a real bang. It's not the king's stage, but this section could still provide some gaps. But it only gets down to business in the final climb. If strong climbers are in the escape group, the day's victory goes to them.
24.05.2023 | 17nd stage | flat
Pergine Valsugana – Caorle (197 km)
Before the final stage in Rome, today's section to Caorle is the last chance for the sprinters. The classification drivers take a breath before the decisive days. And the escapees hope for weakened sprinter teams. In the end, however, the strongest sprinter in the peloton celebrates.
25.05.2023 | 18rd stage | hilly
Oderzo – Val Di Zoldo (161 km)
The riders have already completed 17 stages and yet it almost seems as if the Giro d'Italia is about to start again today. Stages 18, 19 and 20 could turn the overall classification upside down again. Because even a lead of several minutes doesn't have to last if the weather doesn't play along, your legs don't want to go, you lose shape or skiing at high altitude causes difficulties. Attacks are already possible on the third to last mountain, because there is no longer a flat meter to complete after that. In short: If you don't switch on early enough today, it's your own fault.
26.05.2023/19/XNUMX | XNUMXth stage | mountainous
Longarone – Tre Cime Di Lavaredo (182 km)
Without a doubt, the 19th stage of the Giro d'Italia 2023 is the king's stage. Not only because five mountain classifications have to be completed, but above all because the summit of several climbs is over 2.000 meters above sea level today. Anyone who is still broken from yesterday and already has a form curve pointing downwards will have big problems today. The final ascent also plays its part, because it has extremely steep passages and does not tolerate weaknesses in any way.
27.05.2023/20/XNUMX | XNUMXth stage | mountain time trial
Tarvisio – Monte Lussari (18,6 km / BT)
For eleven kilometers, the time trial on the 20th stage ripples along almost completely flat. But then the usual individual time trial turns into a mountain time trial. It goes uphill for more than seven kilometers. The only reason why Monte Lussari does not appear so threatening in the profile of the route is that it has been distorted due to the scale. In reality, it has an average gradient of 12,2 percent, making it by far the toughest climb in this year's Giro d'Italia. The fact that it has to be driven on the last decisive day of all things - and that completely alone - is supposed to be the crowning glory of this tour of Italy.
28.05.2023 | 21nd stage | flat
Roma – Roma (126 km)
Show skating in Rome. The heroes of the 106th Giro d'Italia finally reach their goal after three tough weeks. The winner of the Maglia Rosa was already decided yesterday. Today it could still be about the sprint ranking. So let's look forward to an exciting Sprint Royale from all those sprinters who have held out to this day.
I cannot forget it. Never.. The best moment #GiroDItalia...Welcome #twist106 pic.twitter.com/4Rn2Se4UJR
