Cycling: Olav Kooij won the fifth stage from Paris – Nice. The Dutchman prevailed in front of Mads Pedersen and Tim Merlier. Tadej Pogacar remains leader in the standings.
Kooij celebrates his first win of the season
Fifth stage near Paris – Nice: As expected, there was a mass sprint on the 212,4-kilometer section from Saint-Symphorien-sur-Coise to Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux. The five mountain classifications couldn't change that, because the climbs weren't difficult enough and after the last point assignment, it was still far too far to the finish line. Also a very late attack by Ben Swift (Ineos Grenadiers) was not crowned with success. So could Olav Kooij (Jumbo – Visma) clinched his first win of the season in the sprint. The Dutchman crossed ahead Mads pedersen (Trek – Segafredo) and Tim Merlier (Alpecin – Deceuninck) the finish line. Merlier had the highest top speed but was not well placed in the final kilometer.
Gregaard fights for the mountain jersey
Should also be satisfied with today's stage Jonas Gregaard (Uno-X). The Dane won all mountain classifications and was accordingly able to extend his lead in the mountain classification. There he leads in front of the current overall leader Tadej pogacar (UAE). However, due to an intermediate sprint, his lead has narrowed a bit. david gaudu (Groupama – FDJ) is now only six seconds behind. Starting tomorrow, things really get down to business in the overall classification. The last three stages lead over undulating, partly mountainous terrain. So today's stage was also the last chance for the sprinters.
