E-MTB / Test: We test our individually built Thok MIG Ltd. E-MTB – how does the unique perform in practice? Also: one lucky reader can win the dream bike. All information about the raffle can be found at the end of the article.
Together with our partners from Thok and Paul Lange, we have put a real dream E-MTB together in the past few weeks: Based on the Thok MIT Dream Kit, a fully packed workbench was created part by part, component by component into a lively E -MTB like no other on the planet. The best thing about it: You can win this unique piece - you can find out what you have to do for it at the end of the article. But back to the bike itself: We were even more excited than other test bikes to see how our “own creation” would fare on the trail; because as we often say - a bike is always more than the sum of its individual parts!

Construction story, detailed test and raffle: Thok MIG Dream Kit
The Thok MIG is a great e-mountain bike with independent and well thought-out solutions. The sporty bike is even available as a frame kit, so you can equip the chassis with the Shimano EP8 mid-motor according to your own taste with the parts that suit your own riding style.... We have opted for a very functional structure, […]
Innovative aluminum frame
The frame of the Thok MIG Ltd alone makes the bike stand out from the crowd of e-MTBs. This is primarily due to the striking and certainly polarizing look; The Italians do not stow the battery in the frame as they are used to. Instead, the energy store "hangs" on the underside of the down tube in its own holder on the frame. But before you jump to conclusions – after all, external batteries are a thing of the past, aren't they? – you should be aware of the advantages of this construction: not only is the center of gravity lower (keyword: full driving experience!), but also replacing the battery at home or on the go is much easier. The fact that the external batteries are also significantly cheaper is another plus point. A drop of bitterness for some might be the maximum capacity of 630 Wh, which we also install in our test bike.
The energy recipient of this battery is the proven and, at 2,6 kg, pleasantly light Shimano EP8 motor. You really don't need to waste many words on the top engine from the Japanese: A maximum of 85 Nm torque, dynamic response and good controllability have made it a successful drive for years. The operating concept with a compact display that is easy to read at all times and an ergonomically successful control panel also do the rest. If you also want to deal with the drive in more detail, you can adapt many parameters to your personal preferences using the Shimano E-Tube Project App.

Sporty trail geometry
With its 150 and 140mm travel and mullet wheel mix, the Thok MIG Ltd is somewhere between trail bike and enduro - if we had to choose one of the two drawers, we would definitely put the classy Italian e-MTB in the trail bike category. This is also shown by the geometry, which isn't too extreme and doesn't drive the bike out of its playfulness, even if that might be at the expense of the smooth running at high speeds.

Noble equipment with Öhlins and Shimano
We didn't make any compromises when it came to the equipment for our body. The suspension from Öhlins was already part of the frame set: With the RXF36 M.2 TTX18 in the front, you get a stiff fork with lots of adjustment options. The latter also applies to the TTX1 damper in the rear - in any case, a chassis with which even inventors and tuners get their money's worth. The 12-speed circuit comes from Shimano, with a 510% gear range and a classy XTR rear derailleur. The brakes also come from Japan - proven 4-piston power with XT lettering and 203 mm discs, you can't go wrong there. You are well prepared for trail use with the XT system wheels with 30mm rim width, on which a Michelin tire duo sits. The package is rounded off with an 800mm wide carbon handlebar from Pro - delicious!

The Thok MIG Ltd on the trail
But how does it fare now, the Thok MIG Ltd? First of all, the compact seating position is particularly noticeable. By today's standards, the frame is rather lively, which suits the suspension travel range around 140mm very well. Due to the many adjustment options on the Öhlins components, it is no problem at all to tickle a good portion of pop out of the rear triangle and the MIG Ltd. making it a fun and playful trail bike. Of course, those who would like it a little more comfortable on the trail also have this option - only the "hold the handlebars and straight ahead" fraction could miss a little smoothness - but the bike is simply not designed for that.
A positive feature is the almost non-existent background noise; clever cable routing and the very solidly attached battery on the down tube drive the bike out of any rattling - if it weren't for the Shimano EP8, which unfortunately makes its well-known, design-related "rattling" here and there. Nevertheless: We have seldom been on a quieter Shimano EP8 bike!
The bike cuts a solid figure uphill, even if its strengths are more in trail action. Nevertheless: Thanks to the sufficiently powerful and, above all, easy to control motor and the grippy tires, you can usually climb uphill trails without any problems. If it gets really steep, however, you have to push your center of gravity forward a good bit in order to maintain traction here.
The noble package of components does its job – as expected – absolutely flawlessly. We hardly need to say too many words about the carefree performance of the Shimano 12-speed components. The same applies to the always reliable brakes, which also have enough reserves on board for long descents and heavier riders. Wheels and tires were inconspicuous in a positive sense - although the Michelin tires conveyed a surprising amount of safety given the difficult ground conditions and hardly had to hide from the sometimes much more well-known competition in the bicycle sector.
